Canon Powershot G7 & Flickr C&C

Hi there... I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone here...

I've been looking for a new camera since my last one got stolen and after much searching I thought the G7 looked pretty good... so my question is... does anyone have a G7 and is it as good as it seems? Is there anything that you were surprised about once you started using it? Is there another camera of this ilk that I should be looking at instead? Should I stay away from it at all costs?

I thought it would also be useful for people who might give advice to see what kind of photos I take... and I figured if I'm putting up a link to my flickr page then I may as well ask for C&C while I'm at it...

    My Flickr!

I borrowed the D40 that I took the last photo with, my camera was a Nikon E5200.. my poor little camera...

Anyway thanks in advance and sorry if it's a bit cheeky putting the two things in one thread!

You seem to have a really good sense of composition, a natural eye for a scene, and I'm wondering if you'd be held back by a compact camera...? Is there a reason you want a compact rather than a DSLR, because the price of the G7 isn't far off what you'd get a dslr for.

As it is, a quick look at the specs for the G7 certainly makes it look pretty good, I cant see you regretting it, as long as you don't outgrow its capabilities anytime in the next year or so and have to fork out to upgrade anyway.

Howdy, to be quite honest you look like a competent photographer and I think an slr would be your best bet. You'd probably outgrow a PnS in a few minutes, if you haven't already!

When the G7 came out there was consternation and disappointment in the Powershot community. The G6 is something of a legend and can't be bought for love nor money.

I don't have a Powershot but was waiting to see what the G7 would be like as I was half thinking of getting a compact to have on me all the time. I gave it a miss. The two main criticisms were the lack of RAW and the change to a static screen. The G6 had a screen that could be moved around which made it easy to take shots from up above or down below.

I haven't been following how it has been doing among users since its release and opinions may have changed.

Have a look at this forum:http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=17

As Valentia said, it doesn't have RAW capability and being able only to shoot jpegs is very limiting.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the advice and links, I'm still undecided but oh well... on the other hand the two main drawbacks listed aren't anything that would bother me. I don't really know much about post processing, had never heard of RAW till I went looking at reviews for the G7! the pivoting moving screen thing sounds like something that you'd miss if you had it but I think I'll live without and try not to imagine what kind of pics I might take if I had a moveable screen ;-)

As for why I'm looking for a PnS, it's really about the size and speed, I'm just looking for a camera that I can carry around in my handbag and whip out when I see something that I think would make a good photo... mind you I don't like that there's no real hand grip on the G7... will have to go to a shop and hold it for a little longer...

Anyway thanks again and if there's anyone else out there with opinions and particularly anyone who does have a G7 then let me know what you think!

I have a G7 and it’s a great little camera for keeping in yer pocket when you don’t want to be lugging a DSLR around with you. It’s very sturdy/well made and I think for the size of it the quality of shots produced is really excellent.

The G7 is great for macro stuff which looks like it might suit your style.

You can also get the WP-DC11 underwater casing for the G7 making for a quite reasonably priced top notch underwater setup.

The only bad thing I’d say is the G7 is not good at high ISO – very noisy! So don’t think you’ll be using this in the dark without a tripod.

Don’t worry about lack of RAW.

However as the others suggest the G7 is not a replacement for a DSLR - for serious landscape I would reach for my 5D every time.

Hey and congratulations on your flickr.. some really excellent stuff there.

Can the G7 use the canon flash - 580?

I'm sort of looking for a "pocket" camera, and that might just be the one.

    Merv.

How would the Lumix DMC-TZ3 or TZ1 compare to the G7. Panasonic seem to get fairly good reviews

Panasonic picture quality probably a bit worse(noisier) due to smaller ccd, but allows it have a longer zoom. Panasonic image stabilisation is very good and leica lens should give good results and so these should compare well to the canon. The tz3 has no manual control of shutter speed or aperture though. I got a lumix fz7 recently and enjoy using it
