Didn't Jabba the Harney ban this child killing device in and around the time of the last budget?

How come then that I can walk into any of my local shops and buy a ten pack of just about any brand of cigarette just like I always could?
Was the legislation repealed? Or did the tobacco industry kick up a fuss?

I don't really care, in fact I think it was a stupid thing to do in the first go off, but after all the pomp and fuss that was made when it was announced, I'm just curious as to why it never seems to have been invoked....anyone?

No idea though it's supposed to be enforced since Oct. 6th.

Maybe an extra delay was offered to use up existing stocks or something.

I don't live in Ireland so I don't know the sitution but was there really fuss over something like that?

The first time I bought smokes in France (1992) I asked for 20 Benson and was offered 20 boxes of 20 B&H :)

The reason for this is because there is still loads of 10 packs still in circulation - these are allowed to be sold until they run out. THey are not being imported anymore and so soon they will run out and you won't be able to buy them anymore

There must have been millions of them if they still haven't run out!

Either that or kids just aren't smoking enough.

I think it comes in the 31st of May there is a small sign in the shop beside where I work.

James McKenna - Class president & year rep for 3rd year in Mount Temple Comprehensive welcomes the ban on 10 pack cigarettes.

"I'm confident this will be the icebreaker of our generation. I mean you can get a 10 pack for the price of your lunch & smoke them on your own, but it's just too expensive for a 15 year old to get a 20 .... This means to get smokes we'll have to go halves on 20 packs"

When suggested it might curb people from continuing to smoke James advised "no, nicotine's actually an addictive substance, you find a way"

James believes having to "go halves" will help more people get to know each other, "If you buy smokes with someone you'll probably smoke with them too. Then you get chatting - might even get some non smokers to take up to avoid feeling left out."

Its actually pretty ironic that on one hand they are banning boxes of 10 to stop kids smoking and on the other teaching parents of said kids to save i.e. SSIAs etc. It would be a national tragedy if kids ever put 2 and 2 together and bought boxes of 20 at half the frequency...

    D.

What and save money? Pfft, kids aren't that smart. :D

The real irony is that they sell them at all really.

That's interesting about the stock levels since Ireland and the UK are really the only countries where sub-20 pack sizes are available, and given that a lot of our brands are exclusively Irish it shouldn't take upwards of 5 months (or nearly 7 come the deadline quoted abopve) to get manafacturers to toe the line.
If anything you'd think suppliers would be eager to get rid of the pack size, since after then ban they'll likely see an increase in sales and they'll not have the expense of having a separate packing line for 10 packs.

Whilst on the subject anyone know if packs like the 15 pack JP did will be covered by the ban?

Also, James Mc Kenna sounds like a smart kid....hopefully we'll have the likes of him to vote for in a distant election....could do with a politicain with logical reasoning as a strength...

I don't think JP make 15 boxes anymore in anyway.

I was in my local newsagents recently and was shown a new 20-pack (think it was benson, not sure). It was the shape of 2 10 packs side by side, and when you opened it, there were 2 seperate 10 packs individually boxed and everything. If all companies work like this then the point about social cigarette box sharing won't work!

Anything sub twenty is gone, so yeah JP15 is going soon. I don't know how it affects cigars but I doubt there's many teenagers puffing on Hamlets...

I know a guy my age (21) who smokes a pipe.

OT, I think removing packets of ten from circulation is a great move, but it's just one move in the process of removing the excuses to take up smoking - the workplace ban, a pretty much annual increase in price, ad campaigns and now this. The Government are going about it pretty slowly, but good work nonetheless.

I thought this was the start of a funny joke about gay people:(

anyways, yeah, i was under the impression they were banned too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

sounds to me that soon enough the black market will boom :D

i can understand the sentiment behind the move put it just illustrates how out of touch gov is if they think it'll stop people smoking. as was mentioned people will either gang together to buy em or far more likely bring em back by the case load when they get a cheap ryanair flight to the continent and spread em over a year.

Ahh now I'm going to have to buy a box of every brand before then, for my collection and nostalgia purposes.

Ah i think you're being a bit pessimistic, I don't think its to stop people smoking anyhow - more to stop youngsters taking it up.
I'm not sure it will work, could possibly make things worse- hence the James McKenna thing, overall though I reckon its a good move & worth taking a chance on it.

I really don't think people are gonna hit the continent over them - as far as a I know we're one of the few places that still do 10packs, was 17packs in Germany. Though I have noticed a lot people are buying smuggled 20packs

Worst affected are gonna be those who only smoke when drinking & will now have to buy 20 packs & those who only smoke 10 a day. They're bound to end up smoking up to twice as much

    This is the case.

IRELAND: Cigarette ten packs to be banned
In a bid to discourage children from smoking Ireland is to ban the sale of cigarettes in packs of
less than twenty units as of 31 May 2007. The Health and Children Ministry said that
youngsters’ preference for ten-packs has been shown internationally to be linked to price.
Sean Power, Minister of State at the Health and Children Ministry, said: “I believe the removal
of packs of ten will be a clear disincentive to young people to start the habit and continue
smoking.” The sale of confectioneries that resemble tobacco products is also to be prohibited
    from the same date.

This is true. But the better the cigar the less often you see them in a normal shop. Pikeurs are the nicest I've smoked, but I haven't much experience of cigars in general.

The ban will come in on May 31st, seen a letter to a retail manager.

Grand for me. For 3.00 I can get some cheap lithuanian fags, L&M blue. If not I dont mind buying 20. This wont stop kids buying.

EDIT - also from a shop manager... the Benson or Silk Cut Gemini packs, which include 2 10 boxes, are to get rid of the many 10's in circulation.

THere is some debate apparently over those Gemini packs, according to an article I read in Sunday Times today. Somebody's not happy about there being 2 10packs in a 20box, plus the fact that the 10 boxes inside don't have the health warnings.

I can't understand why anyone would buy a ten pack as they are nearly always stale (presumably because 90% buy 20s). When I smoked, if 20s were not in stock, I would always take another brand rather than get 2x10 stale Majors.

Aaahhh....the days when you could buy them one at a time. :)

Pikeurs are the nicest I've smoked
    King Edward Invincibles. ;)

I dont see whats wrong with it really. And about no warnings on inside packets, thats like saying theres no warning on the fag IN the packet. You buy it with a warning on the outside. No one should complain, unless they're tight arses like.

Pikeurs? c'mon! splash a bit of cash and get some decent cigars, they're worth it.

I've a humidor with ridiculously expensive cigars, but they're oh so sweet.

I is teh poor student...although I will probably splash out and get a few nice ones after the exams, got any suggestions? I plan to pull out all the stops and have a night of wild excess before heading to the alcohol free shores of Sligo and my abstaining family for the summer.

From a mate who's a rep for Gallagher Bros - They're a marketing device to target those who prefered 10 packs (like #Elites above).

The 'packs' in them are soft paper packs rather like the soft-pack cigarettes you get in America.

Like thats really going to stop kids smoking, ffs can't they just try and fix the health service instead of looking for ways to distract us from all there cock ups. If they spent half as much time trying to fix all the problems that they spend listening to ASH Ireland we'd probabley have things alot better.

Truth is, this country is becoming more of a ****ing nanny state with everyday that goes by. I'm an adult, and if I want to put nicotine laced death into my lungs, then thats my choice and nobody elses. Increasing the price of tobacco, getting rid of 10 boxes doesn't entice me to to give up smoking...its enticing me to put my vote towards getting this ****ing patethic government out of office...

I've no problem with what you want to put into your body but I do resent the wasting of millions of euros of taxpayers money in caring for those who chose to "put nicotine laced death" into their lungs.

don't be silly, smoker's practically pay for the whole health service.

true. and along with the alcoholics they dont claim pensions ! if the smokes and the beers disappeared in terms of revenue the whole health sector would grind to a halt :D
