Just a quick query in this, a few people ive spoken too seem to use heavy guage plastic instead of actual randon barrier - prob due to the cost im sure. they reckon it does the same job...

    Anyone doing this ?

and is it a must that the barrier must cover the entire floor (ie bridge the interior walls) or is it acceptable to just lay it in individual rooms?

well a radon barrier is a heavy guage plastic membrane, there are certain standards for this.
Also it MUST not only bridge internal walls but external walls also,
laying it in each room will have ZERO effect

Every sq. mm from inside the house to the outer edge of the external walls must be completely sealed.

Heavy gauge polythene is OK for the radon membrane.

i've heard 1200 guage polythene is okay, but only in certain areas
    of the country

i used TYVEK "Red" Radon barrier, okay, cost a few euro extra but worth it
    for peace of mind
