    Is it 21% or 12.5%?

neither it's 13.5% - that's the standard rate for services

I'd assume it's a "cash" transaction and so wouldn't exist for non business-business transactions

    Thanks eamon234.

VAT is applicable on B2C transactions ninty9er, same as B2B. Not paying VAT on cash purchases is of course common, but it's tax evasion and it's probably not a good idea to advise people to do it on a public forum. I realise you may have difficulty with this concept, what with the Fianna Fail fanboism an' all. :)

Of course we should all factor VAT in when we sell our cars privately too:rolleyes:   It's really a matter for the supplier of the service to police themselves.

Presuming that having a panel beaten back into shape isn't a necessary service would it not be 21% where charged??? I was of the opinion that 13.5% is on utilities and not services

VAT doesn't apply to the private sale of second hand cars. The VAT man (aka revenue) does a very good policing job as any one who has had a VAT audit will tell you
