Indicators on new cars not working?

    Hi all.

Over the past few months, I've noticed a staggering amount of new or new-ish cars who appear not to have properly working indicators. I wonder is it a design or factory fault?

For example. When I'm at a junction and I'm turning right and there is no oncoming traffic on the road coming from my left, I notice that the left indicator of oncoming cars, vans, whatever, who are turning left at the junction, don't appear to be working.

I also find a high failure rate of indicators at roundabouts, especially when turning right or taking the third exit off a roundabout. Left indicators most often fail here too.

Also, on motorways or dual carriageways, I find that a lot of fast two-litre type vehicles also don't have working indicators when switching lanes. I have also come to the conclusion that indicators do not work when coming off a slip road.

Now, I'm not sure if it is an intermittent fault or not, because if I'm behind a car who's indicators didn't work before, they sometimes appear to come on if they turn at another junction.

It doesn't just occur on cars that are cheapish. It appears to also occur on cars that have cost a lot of money, like BMW's, Mercedes, and possibly a higher number of jeeps, SUV's, the bigger family vehicles. All of these mostly have been manufactured in the last 7 years. You'd have thought, that on cars that expensive, that surely properly working indicators are not only a must, but mandatory!

I'm baffled. I wonder to motor manufacturers or mechanics know about these faults? Has anyone experienced this phenomena? I hope I'm not the only one!
