First swallows this year

I've been out gardening every day this week and yesterday, Friday 13th, I saw the first swallows this year. What a delight it was to hear their familiar twittering and then look up and see a pair of swallows darting about over the fields of S W Wexford. Summer must surely be here!.

Excuse my ignorance but are they earlier or later than other years? How has the unusually kind weather affected them, if at all?
