I'm in the last throws of negotiating a deal on a Saab 95 estate (not on carzone, in case you want to go looking :D )

Dealer sounds honest, deal sounds good, ...its a 00 with 100 k, full service and warranty.
All I'd have to bring is the Jimny and a little money (not too much).

Any horror stories / bad experiences out there that should stop me in my tracks?

(Yes, I have read Honest John's)

I've had a few horror stories with Saabs of that vintage. Dash displays give trouble, throttle bodies, air mass meters, turbos and other various sensors. They can be tough to fix unless you know a mechanic who knows his Saabs. I'm not saying that you should steer clear because if you get a good one you will be more than happy - but just watch out for obvious faults.

Engines have a nasty habit of blowing up for no apparent reason and doesn't have the greatest engine to start with according to my local Saab mechanic. I have a 95 turbo estate in at the moment with a turbo problem, an oil seal is worn and letting oil up past where it should be and hence loads of smoke when it starts up from cold, once its warm its fine but it looks like a 1000 euro job to fix.:(

The only thing I would say about Saabs is be careful that they have a full service history with regular oil changes as the turbo engines need a certain amount of TLC. Also check if the DI Cassette has been replaced it is a recall item and should be replaced free of charge.

Day to day they are good cars and a very comfy drive, the biggest pain in the ass I have had is replacing the headlights every few months as they blow regularly.

Here are two good sites for Saabs
