    Hi there,

What's the best aerial(s) to use to receive RTE1/RTE2/TV3/TG4 in the Dungarvan, Co. Waterford region.
Specifically, I'll be installing this in a mobile home based at clonea strand, outside Durgarvan.

    Thanks in advance

RTÉ1, RTÉ2 and TG4 are all broadcast from the Dungarvan transmitter. These will be perfect. TV3 however is not transmitted from here but it can be picked up on ch 27 (not perfect but watchable). Group C/D for here. Anyone know where that TV3 comes from?

If TV3 is a necessity then you can point an aerial at Mount Leinster where you will find (with a booster) a perfect TV3 and TG4 on ch26 and ch23 (Group A aerial for this). RTÉ1 and 2 are VHF from here.

There are also deflectors in the area that will give you BBC1, 2, ITV and Channel 4 (booster required).

    Mossy!
Mullaghanish puts out TV3 on channel 27.

    Another mystery solved then :).

Perhaps I should have added that there is a relay in Nire Valley, Waterford, which has Channel 27 allocated to TV3. Alot of relays have a channel allocated to TV3 but that is as far as it goes.

    Polarization H, Power 25W.

I stole the info from here http://www.geocities.com/corkradio/tvch.html

Not alive though. I do however think TV3 should be forced to broadcast from all relays.

TV3 has only about the same coverage via terrestrial as ITV/BBC had via cable , Deflectors and direct reception BEFORE Digital Satellite.

Simply they won't pay for the last 20%. Which would be fine if there was a FTV card scheme for the Irish channels. I'd rather see ALL the broadcasters forced to provide an economic FTV card scheme than TV3 forced to use all the relays. There are not enough relays and many are too low a power. So even if they did about 65,000 people to 200,000 people (rough guess, and NOT households) would have by UK standards poor off air reception or none at all.

Consider how many PEOPLE 20% is (not households).

Mullaghanish and the Dungarvan relay are in approx the same direction for the original poster I think. A wideband aerial (not C/D) such as a grid/"colourking" at that location may get acceptable TV3 on 27, as well as high quality reception of the other 3 (the transmitters are both Horizontal polarisation).

TV3 from either Mullaghanish (27) or Mt Leinster (26) are both Group A, though the OP might not be too bothered about putting up a dedicated aerial, diplexer for better reception of TV3 if its just a holiday home?

    Hi guys,

Thanks for feedback. Unfortunately, I havent managed to get reception on the TV.

    My equipment:
    - New LCD TV
    - Wideband horizontal orientation aerial (Black)

    Aerial Direction:
I've pointed the aerial in same general direction of other aerials in nearby caravans. However, most other caravans are using 2 aerials (yellow + green). My understanding is that the black wideband should be OK.

Referring to the other caravan aerials, which colour should I use to get reference to the direction. Note RTE 1/2 are my main requirement ?

Does the direction of the aerial have to be "degree" perfect, ie is pointing it in the general direction OK?

    TV tuning:
When people refer to channel number (eg ch 27 for TV3), what does this mean in the context of TV tuning?
As far as I can see the TV only allows auto-tuning and thus I cant set the "channel number".
My current method tuning have been to:
    - Point the aerial in a certain direction and set the TV "auto tuning".
    - If no TV reception, then move the aerial slightly and re-start the auto-tuning
    - And so on.
Is there a better way to perform this tuning operaion? Am I missing something as this method seems to be trial&error?

Apologies for the basic questions - I'm a newbee to all this st

UHF channels are numbered 21 to 69 so 27 should be at the low end of the band

You got no reception whatsoever on any channel??!

You should have at least got something. RTÉ 1, 2 and TG4 are very strong.

At one point I was able to get a very poor/snowy RTE1/2, but "fine adjustment" on the TV didnt improve matters much.

When I get a poor/snowy signal, should I start making minor movements of the aerial, and then do an "auto retune" on the TV?

Can I take it no matter what direction the TV aerial is facing, I should get some signal on the TV after doing the auto-tune?

If no TG4 was received, I wonder if the telly was even scanning the UHF band. Otherwise I'm thinking that the lead for the aerial must be somehow damaged. In particular, mabye the shielding and the inner core are touching at some point....

If the signal is very strong in the area, it might be best to get a basic indoor aerial and use it for directioning. That would show that the problem is with either reception or a fault somewhere in the antenna setup.

The green aerial is for RTE 1, RTE 2 and TG4. At a guess, the yellow aerial is for South Coast reception. Probably best not to consider that one until the bigger issue is sorted:)
