    define standard player ... ? model ?

my bog standard ultra cheap player will play avi's ... xvid divx .. and so on .. mpeg ...

An expensive philips one my dad has won't ...

You'll probably want to use something like nero to burn the movie to a DVD as an actual DVD disc .. not just burning the file onto the disc

Just do it in MPEG2 like said above. This is gauranteed to work in all DVD players

try http://www.doom9.org/ go to the guides section or look in downloads for a program to convert your file to the correct format.

for simplicity i use Nero Vision that came with the nero burning software. Or try ConvertXtodvd

DVD players are generally only capable of playing mpeg streams. You'll need a converter program like diko. Check the FAQ and Free software stickies.

DVDSanta will convert most formats and copy them straight onto a dvd that will play on all players
