How much time do you spend on it?

Take us through a typical day/sites visited.

Nowt wrong with being on the internet all day, im on it for maybe 12 hours a day every day, apart from weekends. It dosent effect my work or social life at all. You just have to limit yourself.

    cancel your broadband connection
set your router to turn off at certain times
    cut your ethernet cable

'Set yourself a limit. Eg. Only allow yourself an hour a day on the internet (unless your doing work) and just go out more.

Broadband is a great thing but since it has become cheap and available I think a lot of peoples social lives have been effected! It's not healthy to be on the internet all day every day.

It sounds cheesy but the first step is to admit it.

    Good luck!'

    'I also find the internet and TV can rule my free time if i dont control my addiction, here's some tips;

    TV
    1. Check the TV schedule and if you cant find anything worth watching don't bother turning it on.
    >if i just turn it on before checking i'll just sit there for hours waiting for something to come on
    2. After a program is finished. immediately turn off the tv.
take a deep breath, count to 10 and decide if you want to turn it back on.
    >most of the time ill be happy to go and do something else, but if i keep flicking around ill be there for hours.
    >this might work for the internet too, count down links. 'i'm going to click 3 more links then log off and take a break for a while'

    INTERNET
    1. Get one of those email notification gadgets (i have one for gmail)
    >if i can tell instantly that i have no mail i wont bother going through the whole process of logging in and maybe checking something else while im at it.
    2. Hide your bookmark folder for a while
    >if you dont have instant access to the sites you keep going back to you'll forget about them
    3. make a phonecall to a friend
    > ring someone and try and arrange something, after talking to someone i find i can regain the energy to go and do something
    4. Delete your bebo account

If nothing works for you just go cold turkey.

I used to be a zombie to the TV so I went cold turkey and i had much more free time to be active and energetic. i have the odd relapse but mostly i've learnt to have a life. i just have to curtail my internet usage to the same degree and ill be laughin''

Generally non-substance addictions are defined through their obsessive and compulsive aspects, as well as the negative social and personal consequences that they may have on the persons life. If this is an issue for you just stopping using the internet may work, but what may additionally happen is that you substitute that particular behaviour for another compulsive/obsessive one. All I can say is if you feel that this is affecting your life why not see a therapist who deals with addictions, it will give you a chance to explore this issue and the effects it may be having on your life.

since it has become cheap and available

Cheap? In england what we pay for 1mb broadband - gets you 12megs.

    Anyway...

How long would you spend on it?

I'm on it as much as possible tbh, but there's nothing to do in my area and i would preferably stay away from drunk/druggie kids (Im 16)
