Blocks on foundation

    Just started a house, contract build in cork. When agreeing a deal with the builder I 'think' he said 3 rows of blocks would be put on the foundation for the floor level. I asked him this week to put on another row of blocks to rise the house at a cost of 3k. The problem is that he told me a block would rise it 9 inches. so with '3'rows of blocks and my extra row, logic says the floor level should be 36" at least over the foundation level. I measured it this morning at 30". I dont want to go and hassel the builder, however I dont want to be ripped off either. Any suggesions for a first timer?

    before you rush off and make sweeping changes like this, don't forget your PP has a height on it, based on your plans. Make the house too high, and be unlucky to get a PP enforcement officer visit, and it'll cost you a lot more to take the house down.............

    You don't have to use full height 9" blocks - you can use what are called 'soap bars', which are either 4" x 4" or you can get 6" x 4" too. There are even 'bricks', which are 60mm high (commonly used around lintels...).

    Why are you 'lifting' the house, you're only going to have to fill that 30"-36" back in, again, with something........just sounds.......curious?

    Got a pic?

    Hi Galwaytt,

    Thanks for your post. House is situated down a steep hill so I am trying to rise it. Currently looking from my 'kitchen' into an 8 ft. cliff of earth. They had to dig out for levels. Def. wont be blocking anyones view except my own!

    yes, but if it's a hill situation, there is usually something in the planning about breaking the skline behind you, with house viewed from front.

    Just be carefull.

    Further information;

    Rang Builder, No problem he wont be adding the extra 6 inches of block until some of the floor needs to be poured. Problem solved! :D
