hi just wondering if you format the hard drive on a hp pavilion do you lose all the data, theres 2 drives a main hard drive and a recovery drive, do you lose the data from the recovery drive? is the recovery drive like a back up drive?

is the recovery drive not just a partition of the hard drive. i.e. there is only one actual hard drive in the computer and it is broken into two partitions.

i think the idea of these are, you make a copy of the recovery drive to a CD and then delete it off.
    is the computer only new?

it's a friends pc, and basically looks like they need to re format it, that are that many errors on it it won't even boot from the win xp disk. i'm not 100% sure on these things, I'd imagine myself the whole hard drive would be formatted

how do you mean? the XP cd should be able to boot itself up without any harddrive access. If you can't get to the options screen for it(where you choose new install or repair) thats not good, and its not likely the hd at fault then either.

If you can, well that recovery partition is likely an alternative way to boot, a system for deleting off your existing windows install and putting a fresh one in. During the starting of your boot(bios phase) , is it written anywhere at the top and bottom of the screen a key to push to access more boot options? you can likely boot that partition.

Though that will nearly most defininatly wipe out all data, i'd suggest maybe something like a knoppix cd or one of the bart live windows xp cd's and see if you can access the drive, what state its in and so forth...
