Flopped straight, river gives backdoor flush

First hand of a 6-seater STT. Everyone on 2k chips, blinds 20/40.

Folded round to button who calls. I complete with A-2o in the SB and BB checks.

Pot is 120. Flop is 3-4-5 rainbow.

I check looking for bluffs/one-pair hands and they duly oblige - BB bets 80, button raises to 200. I think he's putting on the pressure with missed overcards a lot so I reraise to 800 to find out where it's at (and planning on folding to a shove). BB folds, button calls. Hmmm... set? (surely even if he's played with crap PF and hit a pair, he'd respect the possibility of an overpair like 7-7 or 8-8 and with 2 pair, I reckon he shoves)

Pot is now 1800. Turn comes 3d to put 2 diamonds on board (and more worryingly, a possible house. Check, check. I'm now a bit more comfortable, I think that's a weak check if he's improved against someone who's just reraised him big.

River comes 8d. So unless his K-Q, K-J, K-10 etc. is two diamonds, I reckon I've got it.

I bet 900 (I was thinking of this as half the pot rather than as 3/4s of my stack), he calls... with Kd7d

Now this isn't a bad beat post and I'm not bitching about the flop reraise call for a third of his remaining chip with overcards & a gutshot (well, not much  ) - I'm just looking for comments on how I played it... should I always protect on the turn against a flush draw (even though I'm OOP & quite put off by his flop reraise call which coulda just turned into a house) or was the real mistake betting the river? I know you might say that I'm probably only getting called by a better hand but I was trying it as a blocker bet, I guess (I think I can feel the abuse coming already for this one... :o ) - basically, I thought I was ahead so didn't wanna give it up but wasn't sure what the plan would be if I checked & he shoved (I haven't looked strong since the flop so he might fancy it)

    Anyone show me the light?

EDIT: had a wrong read in on him there - never had him on a better ace

actually, you're right - not sure what I was thinking typing that... seem to remember being a bit paranoid about a higher straight but woulda called I'm sure. I hate trying to remember/describe my thought processes afterwards

lol, really give up poker if you fold here, you would be such dead money otherwise.

you should have bet the turn its a shortstacked game plenty of worse hands iwll call a shove.

Moe if you are serious about this hand and its not a wind-up here's what is most wrong with it imo.

Its shorthanded and you are the small blind with an Ace. The button limps. You probably have the best hand pre-flop so why not raise?
What has transpired afterwards is you have gone broke in an unraised pot. This is a criminal thing to happen.
Obviously the button didn't cover himself in glory in this hand but what can you do.

When you flop the straight I think you should bet out on it. It is not a lock hand by any means. Although your check-raise is fine here too and should end the hand there and then.
