Well it was planned by L&H that she would come this year, currently looking like it won't be until sometime next year. Any fans may be aware of her current storyline, and maybe if the storyline had gone one way she would have been available...

But... what would she talk about? Home and Away? I know college is supposed to be fun and all, and I don't mean this in a pretensious way, but shouldn't UCD be trying to attract more high profile academic speakers and policy makers as opposed to daytime TV actors of questionable academic significance? No offence to Sally

I did say I'm not trying to be snooty or whatever, but cmon, Sally from Home and Away? That's pretty close to the bottom of the barrell. Although, as far as I remember from my (sister's) H&A fan days, she did do pretty well in the H.S.C.

To answer your question, no they shouldn't.I'd much rather someone I like and know like Sally, Dewey or Dr Cox than a random politician talking about stuff that I have absolutely no interest in. I joined most of the societies I joined for good guests , fun , enjoyment etc, I dont go to stuff like that for academic purposes. Her academic significance is not questionable it is non existent, and rightfully so- its fun, its a break.
She would talk about Home and Away and she would probably have a lot to say since shes been on it so long. Then there would be questions, theres a Home and away fanclub in UCD so im sure we'd have a lot of questions to ask .There are plenty of academics that get called in week after week to talk about politics, human rights or watever the debating societies decide is an interesting topic, we are not short on academics contributing to UCD. Im not really interested in politics and most of the debates dont stir any interest in me. Im academic in terms of reading for my courses , I dont feel the need to attend society events for educational purposes.So I'd have to disagree with you and emphasise the importance or non academic speakers.

Sally is an academic speaker, at least if she plays it in charachter. doesnt anyone remember that a couple of years ago sally dissappeared for 6 months? allegedly the charachter was coming to ireland to work as an archaeologist. she could talk about what she dug up!

as an archaeology student, im excited!
