Experience of online hotel reservation sites

I'm travelling to New York in July and have been looking around for the best hotel deals. I've narrowed my search and at this point have a shortlist of hotels I'm interested in.
From my research , and based on some experience in the past, it seems that sites such as www.hotels.com are fine when searching for hotels but no advantage pricewise. Also as they debit your credit card at time of booking you might be better booking directly through the hotel website, which will probably only pre-authorise your credit card.

Anyone have any advise on how to get the best deals when booking hotels online.

    Thanks.

Once you've identified a few hotels that seem worth checking out, call them directly and ask if they have any deals or offers if you were to book for a number of days. If you have a skype account or similar it'll only cost a few cents to do this and you'd be surprised how negotiable some prices can be (especially if it's during the quiet season).

    Hi BullPost,
I've used http://www.ratestogo.com many times and have found the prices are better that booking directly with the hotel.

    Enjoy the big apple.
