Australian Tax - 29% of everything!

As I'm here on a WHV i have to pay 29% tax on every cent i earn which isn't one bit cool. If I become a resident for tax purposes i can get taxed at the normal rate and get my tax free allowance. I've looked around other websites but they are no use, especially the thorntree on lonely planet which is crowded with aussies who seem to think paying anything less than 29% on every penny is robbing the state.
