As I'm here on a WHV i have to pay 29% tax on every cent i earn which isn't one bit cool. If I become a resident for tax purposes i can get taxed at the normal rate and get my tax free allowance. Given that I intend to work 6 months in my current job (and have a contract) and have signed a six month lease can i now claim this even though I'm only on a WHV.

I've looked around other websites but they are no use, especially the thorntree on lonely planet which is crowded with aussies who seem to think paying anything less than 29% on every penny is robbing the state.
