Interesting tie here. Both are pretty much true to the semi finals. Could be a dress rehersal for that semi final.

I fancy the Kiwi's to win it.

    Thoughts?

    Updates here later.

Bugger... that's a nugget of info that I was missing. In that case it'll probably be the black caps for the win.

hope the black caps win this one,the only reason being i have money on them for the tournament and a win today will bump up their convidence even more especially again a very good sri lanka team

I want New Zealand to win this tournament I am still a little worried though about the fact they have to face the top three sides in a row though. Its not impossible to think they could lose all three would that mean god forbid they could be out?:(

I'd laugh if NZ ended up winning the cricket WC and then bottling the rugby.

Dont think they will though, I'd fancy Australia against them when it came to the big occasion. Interesting to see how they do against the other likely semi-finalists in their next 3 games.

By the way, NZ win toss and bat.

That was the key for me too. Malinga missing is a huge huge loss to SL, and might just be the difference. In the last ODI series against NZ in NZ, he was good for a couple of wickets per game.

Vaas against Fleming will be interesting. He's got him out quite a few times. Not bunny territory, but it will bein the the back of Flem's mind.

    Oh... and GOE BLACK CAPS!

Yeah, Vaas got him for a duck. Good call.

    Taylor out as well. 4-2

My God! NZ are 5-2 after 6 overs! a run rate of 0.83 per over :D

A lot of work to be done from here.

99-4 now, NZ in big trouble.

    Orham gone.

    142-6

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

I reckon they'll still get a competitve score.

    NZ 144-5 after 38 Styris74*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

219-7 in the end. Styris with a hundred.

Pretty good total after the bad start and plodding middle overs, hopefully we get a close finish

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

If they can avoid they can bond's first spell they should be able to pick off the other bowlers(except Vettori)

I doubt it... 84/1 in no time at all.

    220 is looking below-par.

Yeah NZ went at a snails pace for most of their innings. Only scored something liked 4 boundaries after the 20th over.

93-1 after 16. Some poor fielding by NZ.

Sri Lanka 179/3 in the 39th.

    Wicket.

Silva c Bond b Vettori 23 when the score was 180/4

Currently SL 185/4 after 39 overs

    35 required from 11 overs

keep the updates coming DMC,the remote is in the other halves hand atm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

No worries. Listening to 5 Live on the web.

Sri Lanka 204/4 after 42 overs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Sri Lanka 210/4 after 43 overs

    10 needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

Yeah all over. SL inched towards the target with plenty of overs left.

    222-4 off 45 Sangakarra 69*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

New Zealand 219/7 off 50 overs
Sri Lanka 222/4 after 45.1 overs

Sri Lanka win by 6 wickets.

Malinga who? Didn't need their star names today. Sangakkarra getting 69 off 100+ balls. The game was lost in the first 20 overs of the NZ innings.

SL are the real deal. Vaas would be my man of the match.

    Points table to come.

Well they're the only team I could see beating the aussies in a final. Already did it back in 1996. Lets face it, SA, England and NZ would be beaten before the game started.

Ideally for them, I think SL would be well fancied if they play Australia in St. Lucia in the semi-final..... slow low burner, not seen much of Malinga (if fit).... The game in Grenada on Monday against might be a taster.... SL lose that, they get 4th place.... go to St Lucia... hmmm.... intrigue!

Aussie are not all-conquering my friend.

On their day any of those sides could take Australia.

There'd be too much of a mental block for those sides, the aussies aura would be too much.

NZ- Aus have beaten them in every knock out game I can remember in recent years.

    Eng- Need I elaborate, chances?

SA- Same as NZ. You can argue all you want but the game against bangladesh just reinforced their reputation as bottlers.

SL- Only challengers in my mind.

I don't totally disagree there, but Aus have been beaten on a fair few occasions in the past and are sure to be beaten again in the future.

I wouldn't be that shocked if SA/NZ/SL take the cup home.

I think the point is being made that, while what you say is true, Australia are focused on the prize. The CB series and the Chappell-Hadlee series was a charade, a mask. They knew that if they won those tournaments at a canter, they were peaking too early.

They were tweaking their team to get it exactly right, tuned to perfection, and be ready, in preparation for Ireland tomorrow. :)

The Aussies showed their weakness in the tour to SA and in the Chappell-Hadlee series. They can be beaten.

I'm sure that you were kidding a little there Damo. There's no way that those loses were in some way strategic. Yes, they are peaking at the right time. The same thing could happen to any of the other semi-final qualifiers.

Let's not kid ourselves. This is a funny game and the cup is very much within reach of all of the qualifiers.

... unless of course you guys think that it's that much of a foregone conclusion that the ICC should just hand Aussie the cup now and cut this unnecesarrily long tournament short. :D

Just a tad, but if you lose, and if you are an Aussie, it renews the focus, stokes the fire in the belly, and it gives John Buchanan a headache :D It happened in the Ashes. Lost them in 2005, thrashed England at the next opportunity. Lost the ODI series at home, now making amends in the World Cup, the stage where it matters.

NZ are still nailed on for a semi-final spot, but they dare not go into the semis after losing to two other semi-finalists. Showing their weaknesses right now won't help NZ.

Personally, if the World Cup ended now, on Friday the 13th, the day Ireland play Australia... I'd take it! I don't want the Aussies to win. Anyone but Australia.

EDIT: I'll add this point. Ricky Ponting is chasing his own legacy. He's seen Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath get send-offs unimagined before. They were champions, world record holders. Ponting is thinking, as a batsman and captain, he wants to go beyond what them bowlers achieved, and get his own recognition. As a middle order batsman, there is only one name in the pantheon of great Australians. Its Bradman. 2 World Cups as captain is a good starting point. The only flaw in this argument is, will he have a decent team to lead and will they all pull with him?

I admire the Aussies and will admit that, on current form, they should be a shoo-in for the cup.

My heart is talking when I say that I am still hoping that SA can win this one.

My apologies. Anyway you can always shove it in my face if SA do the impossible and win the WC. :D

New Zealand did beat Australia 3-0 not to long ago but bear in mind the Aussies did not have Clarke, Symonds, Lee and Gilchrist and Ponting, I mean those five are considered to be five of the finest one day players in the world. Sri Lanka are the side most likely to trouble Australia, their bowling and fielding is excellent and I can't imagine anyone will smash them out of their ground.
Oddly I think if England fluked their way into a semi they may actually cause Australia trouble they know how to beat them.

All the sides that could still make it into the semis know how to beat Australia.

    It's the doing that's the problem :D
