PS1 and PS2 ad campaigns were successful so why change now?

I haven't seen a single advert for the PS3 yet.

They must only be targeting very specific time slots on TV that I don't watch.

I come across Xbox and Nintendo adverts quite often though.

I caught a PS3 ad on TV last night. I was cringing during it thinking "what is this rubbish?".

Compare this crap to the groovy Gears of War trailer that was shown around Christmas. No comparison.

It's not, believe it or not.

The ads are viral marketing, designed for 2 purposes. One, is exemplified in this thread: to get people talking about it and spread word of mouth. (spread/viral). The other is to get the PS3 and playstation brand into what us marketeers call "the evoked set". That being the group of products your brain automatically associates with a certain product type.

You couldn't be more aware of the playstation brand. Sony, through this type of advertising, is making a different audience aware of it's brand!

Thats all well and good and I understand the principles you are talking about but Sony are unfortunatly in a position where they need to justify the price of their "luxury good" therefore I think that product demonstaration is a very neccesary (and absent) part of their marketing strategy. They need to be shifting units now and the people who will buy them first are early adopters and techys. This kind of viral startegy has little to no appeal to this market. Theyre viral marketing techniques have been questionable for the last while. Didnt they fire their UK viral agency before christmas becasue they got caught out with a PSP "fansite"?

in fairness the medal for dumbest ad of last year had to be xbox 360 and gears of war (i think) when it had a guy with a big gun just blasting a massive mutant to the music of that song from donnie darko, "mad world" by gary jules. basically made the game look like the most stupid game on earth.almost like a mcbain movie from the simpsons " i just stand here and blashst this guy, yesh"

completely agree with you here on Sony's goal but surely they could be doing it with better adds. Sony Bravia anyone??

Personal opinion of the product aside they're good ads that get people talking and its one of the first brands that you think of.

I thought the Gears ad was good. It got what the game is about across.

It is a Mcbain shoot them up! The music was good for the ad too but not really in place with the scene IMO but I thought overall it wasn't an annoying ad and the graphics caught peoples attention because they were so good and detailed that people wanted to know what the ad was for.

I think the console ads for PS3 are crap. They aren't weird enough to be like the PS2 ads and they aren't good/funny/anything else either. They are just boring.

I don't like the Nintendo ads either but I don't think I'm in the target market for them as they are trying to attract non-gamers more than anything else and the ads look like an instructional video at times.

Some of the EU "This is living" PS3 ads:

Haha, hilariously bad ads, yet here we are talking about the PS3 brand, I'm sure exactly what Sony was going for with this nonsensical gibberish.

Thinking about it, with the PS3's current software releases they probably didn't have enough A class titles to make a decent gameplay compilation ad.

so threads like this appear on forums, and people ask "wtf was that..." in the office the next day.

the idea isn't to go "omg playstation", it's to make you talk about the ad, and subliminally plant the word "playstation" in your head as you discuss how weird, or sh1te the ads are...

...and apparently the mix of violence and mawkishness that the advert contained made it rather popular. Says a lot about how to create effective advertising......
