Airport extreme set-up with Eircom

    Hi

I was thinking about getting an Airport extreme base station I was just wondering could someone explain to me the exact procedure for setting one up with Eircom? I have no experience with setting up wireless networks. Does it replaces the Eircom Netopia router? Does it simply connect to it via ethernet? That sort of thing.

Also would I see much of a boost in range over the netopia router?

    Thanks.

Yeah you'll still need the Eircom router. And I assume you can either have the Airport connect to the Netopia via wireless or ethernet if you wish.

    As Sad Prof said.

You can (a) set it up via ethernet, or (b) set it up via wireless.

For ethernet, you can set it up as a bridge, google "airport extreme bridge setup", and that should get you on your way.

For wireless, you set it up as a WDS (Wireless Distribution Service(?)) and it acts as a relay base station for the main router (in this case, your eircom one).

The WDS is easy to set up, if you have an Airport Extreme install disk, run through setup again, and where it asks you whether you want to "Create a new network" or "Join an existing network" choose the 2nd option and follow the prompts..

Come to think of it, you could probably set up an ethernet bridge the same way.

The only downsight is when it comes to security, I think WDS is quite restrictive on the types of security it uses (AFAIK). I couldnt get my X360 to find my Airport ~Express cos it used WEP or something. Cant remember. Be prepared for quite a bit of googling. Great satisfaction when you've done it though..

    Hope this helps

Ah darn, one of the reasons I was going to get it was because I was hoping it would be easier to get new devices to connect to it wirelessly. The Netopia browser can be a bit of a nightmare, its seems to be impossible to get my DS setup with it. Thanks for the information though. Filling in a lot of blanks.
