Im interested in the types of Camera everyone has. You don't have to give details about the exact model but when I was buying my camera in Australia lots of people pushed me towards a Canon. In the end I went with the Konica Minolta (Dynax 7) because my family had owned a Minolta for years without any troubles. So I went with it and havent had any troubles in the year and a half I have had it.

So...what cameras do you all have..any positives/negatives so far??

Canon 350d, with loads of toys, and I love it, but I hate it's tiny LCD screen, and it's 3fps.

Pentax MZ-6, Pentax P30, FED 2, Flexaret IVa. Few lenses for Pentaxes. And I am trying to find some good and cheapet external meter. It is the best for street and night photography. I had SVERDLOVSK, but it went mad. That one was almost perfect.
And some flash, I do not know what it is 'cose I don't have battery charger so far :-)

Uh Oh, I can see this one turning into another willy waving contest.
And to get mine waving, 20D+grip, 5D+grip. Plus loads of other bits and bobs.

Nikon D200, F100 and a crap load more lenses than I'll ever need (due to switching from 35mm to digital) but can't ever bring myself to getting rid of any....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

Nikon D200 with grip, D50 and various lenses. I love the D200 but the D50 is better at higher ISO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Canon 30D, Grip, sigma and bigma lens's..:)

    DarrenG,

The D50 is better at higher ISO's? That is really interesting to hear. any chance you could post the same pic with high iso's from the D50 and D200 for comparison please?!?!

    Thanks,

    Pete.

    Nikon FE2, 24mm 2.8 AIS, 50mm 1.8 AIS, 30-105 AIS, 75-300 AIS, 135 2.8 AIS.
a positive PLETHORA of macro adapters and teleconverters and the like.

1(one) Box Brownie from 1949 with (luckily) a 620 takeup spool, roll of film waiting to be scanned right now ...

A folding pocket Kodak from 1920 or thereabouts , takes 120.

And last, but definately not least, my lovely Yashica Mat ...

    Digital
    - Olympus E1
    - Olympus E300
    - Canon PowerShot A640

    Film
    - Mamiya 645 Pro TL
    - Olympus OM10
    - 2 Olympus OM4Ti
    - Zenith Photosniper

And a ton of lenses for the above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,713 ✭✭✭DaireQuinlan

    "Zenith Photosniper"

Had to wiki this one. How on earth did you get hold of one of these ??!

    1. thats one wierd looking camera.
    2. I don't think I'd ever be tempted to point it at anybody that might have paranoid trigger happy bodyguards lurking around !

    -edit-
"Mamiya 645 Pro TL" now THATs a camera I'd love to have. I've been looking at getting a 6x6 medium format SLR for quite a while, bronica or mamiya or something similar. mannn they're expensive though. Actually the bodies never seem that bad, but the lenses/backs/prisms seem to be what really cost you.

a secondhand hasselblad should cost less than 700 quid - body, lens, and back.
you'd need to factor in another hundred quid or two for a good lightmeter, though.

Got a good deal on the kit on ebay
    645 ProTL body with prism/meter, 80mm f2.8, 150mm f2.8, 120back and power winder grip.

and a few extras to boot. It set me back about 2100Eur and is still sold as new for 6400Eur. Not a bad deal??

    A Box Brownie I mean a Canon 350D with the kit, a Sigma 70-300 and a Sigma 50-500 and a wish for a 30D.

    I have the 350D, 17-85 IS and 50mm f1.4. Plan to get a tele-lens soon though.

Can I be so bold as to ask why the 30D is rated by a lot of people a lot higher than the 350D? Don't they have the same sensor? Would the differences not be just a few extra functions? Surely the extra money if being spent at all would be worth throwing at a 5D with full frame? (Sorry if I'm hijacking!!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭Dara Robinson

Olympus. The E1 is a great camera. Reliable, durable and easy to use. There is a new version of this out soon also

Cannon...... pfffft..... over rated and expensive :p

How come Olympus users are like Mac users - it seems less like a camera manufacturer, and more like a religion!!!?!

I only bought a 350D because I already had canon lenses that I could use with it. But having made that choice there's been no regret. A lot of people prefer the 30D to the 350 because it's bigger, bulkier, and more solidly built - and possibly also has spot metering(?)

I love and hate the Olympus E1 see below. It's an underdog camera that's all.

    Hate (E1)
    - Only 5MP
    - Unusable noise at ISO800
    - Poor customer relations
    - Replacement cycles over namy years
    - High prices.

    Love
    - Body design
    - Quality of pro lenses
    - Reliability
    - 2x crop factor
    - Waterproof (Wash under taps)
    - Antidust (4 years and still no dust on sensor and never cleaned)
    - 12 shot RAW buffer.
    - High quality accessories
    - IT'S BLACK :)

I was walking past the thrift shop on georges street this morning and they have some 'zenit' camera on one of their displays for 30 euros. Didn't get a chance to check and see what type, I can check tomorrow morning if I get a chance. I normally walk past well before it opens unfortunately or I think I may have just bought it there and then just out of curiosity ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

My experience with russian cameras are good. Mechanicaly, than can survive everything. I used my FED 2 as self-defence mace. Problem is with quality of lenses. We have tested two cameras with next serial numbers and picture quality was completely different. Perfect with one camera and very poor with the neighbour.
It is even with copies of Hasselblads (Kiev 80). It is like lottery what you get. If you are lucky, you can get very good camera and lenses. If not, you have just something to put onto your fireplace or your dest at work.

I bought my Kiev 60 as a refurbished model from Arax, they cleaned it out, gave it a mechanical once over and added in a mirror lock-up function. It's been nothing but flawless for me ever since i got it. I don't think there was ever a serious problem with the design of the cameras, just shoddy manufacturing standards. So in every Kiev there should be a good camera just waiting to get out...

    ;)

As for the lenses, they've been absolutely fine for me too. Sharp and contrasty. Sometimes i do get caught out by the shallow depth of field with these lenses but thats down to my lack of skill rather then the lenses lack of quality.

I have a 350D that I got last week and still want to have its babies. I'm assuming this will wear off pretty soon though.

Also: Cosina C1 and C90 35mm bodies, along with cosina 50mm, Pentax 55mm (who the feck makes 55mm lenses?) cosina 35-70, pentax 28mm and soligar 100mm macro lens.

had a brief go of a nikon D70 yesterday. didn't warm to it straight away. screen was smaller than it needed to be, for a start.

    Film - Nikon F80

    Digital - Nikon D200 ;-)

D200 is new and my first digital SLR, still playing with it and finding things it can do.
The F80 I'm keeping for B&W film. It's the only way to do it think.

Canon Powershot A620.A just above average digital camera.I never really found the need for interchangable lenses.I'd just find it way too fiddly(sp?) switching back and forth.Never really liked using film either,I just love the freedom of digital cameras.A bit narrow minded I know...

On contrary. People interested in photography are open minded. Do what you like, use camera that suits you the most, make pictures you like and be opened to other opinions. It's your pictures what counts, not your equipment!
