Terminal hiccup!

Just a small but irritating problem. I'm using terminal for IRC chat, but when the screen gets full it only refreshes the bottom line, meaning I have to press ctrl+l to get to read the last few lines of chat. Really annoying! Anyway, would anyone know how to disable this so I can chat happily ever after?
