    hi!

I was looking at a couple of websites featuring centrepoint. I had thought it consisted only of student apartments. Am I wrong or is it a sort of shopping complex with offices and student apartments all inclusive?

    thanks,
    alison

There's 50 or so student apartments, a Spar shop, a pharmacy, Elvery's sports and a couple of furnishings places. Nice spot but a bit out of the way.

    thanks for the reply

I know it's a bit far from the university, but how frequent are the buses? Is it a dangerous area to walk at around 10pm?

    any replies are most welcome

I live there and it's okay if you're a first year. I'm a repeat 3rd year (basically a wannabe 4th) and I don't really like it at all and the ****ing ***** in reception doing my shizzle in at the moment with their overdemanding inspection routine. I lived in gort and corrib and cuairt and they all better

Basically, centrepoint is run by the same sorta crew that run Gort na coiribe afaik. They even use the same maintenance guys who come around now and then. One of the girls in the office is very unprofessional, will ring your parents instead of ringing you if there is a problem, which is very annoying. They are OTT with regards cleanliness when doing inspections. The rooms have to be absolutely immaculate to pass. I'm moving out in 2 weeks and I'm dreading seeing how much of a deposit I get back. Basically it's very far out, and only because I have a car I can live there. I certainly wouldn't be walking into college from centrepoint. It's handy for me though as most of my mates live nearby in the green and galway city gym is right across the road. I'd really try getting into Gort or Cuairt if I were you (definitely better overall than centrepoint).

    walt0r 10ks for your advice.

I am from Malta and here we're used to catching a bus to go to university and sometimes it even takes around 25 mins to arrive home from uni by bus, so the fact that it's not very near is not that important as long as the bus service is decent. For this reason I would like to know more about this: how frequent are the buses from/to centrepoint? every 10, 15, 30 mins? do they keep to their schedule?

Also how far is the bus stop? they have told me there isn't a bus which goes directly to/from NUI, but just to the city centre. is there another bus which goes to NUI and has a bus stop some 10 mins from centrepoint?

One last thing, how safe is the centrepoint area? is it safe to walk in that area after dusk before midnight? or is it known for being more dangerous than other areas? I had considered Dunaras, but I've heard the area is not that safe.

I don't know from personal experience but I seriously doubt you'll do better than a bus every half hour from somewhere like Centrepoint and I suspect hourly is probably as good as it gets. Also, unless there's been a big improvement since the last time I had to get buses in Galway, they won't be reliable and certainly, you can expect to spend 25 to 30 minutes on the bus at least if it's even close to rush-hour.

I also wouldn't recommend walking anywhere around the city once it starts getting dark. Sadly Galway isn't as friendly as it used to be.

Don't get me wrong, Galway is still a nice place but women (and indeed men) walking around on their own at night are asking for trouble in any modern city.

Probably not very helpful to you but I thought somebody should say it.

If you can, you should take walt0r's advice and try to get somewhere closer to the university.

10ks RealJohn. People at Centrepoint have told me that buses are frequent to the city centre but obviously they said so because it's in their interest.

I'll try to find a different type of accomodation and see what comes up.

    10ks to all of you.
    You've been of great help.

Use the online classified ads in the Galway Advirtiser. Google it. You should be able to get a room around Newcastle or Terryland from about 60 to 80 euros a week depending on qulity. these areas are generally safe as they are full of students and a good laugh. You should also drop a line to the International Students Soc in the college. i kinda knew one guy who was involved last year and i think they helped sort out accomodation. If you are planning to go the student complex route Gort na Coirbe is the best option followed by Cuirt. if you can't get into either try house sharing because dunaras is in a pretty bad area and corrib village is a ****hole.
