    Hello there.
First of all this may sound a bit like a bitter rant but I assure its not. We played the Emerjenza semis recently and didnt get through. I have no problem with this as I know its because we couldnt cajole enough of our people into paying €10 to see 25 mins of us on a Wednesday night and not because we're not a decent band. We knew what we were getting into but thought it might be fun to play Vicar St if we managed to scrape to the final. So this is not sour grapes.

For all bands / musicians wanting to enter to music Emerjenza music competition (see www.emerjenza.net), I think its fair to point out a few things.

If you dont sell loads of tickets (a pain in the arse anyway...) and have loads of mates wishing to pay at least €8 (rising to €10 in the 2nd round) to watch 20/25 mins of your music then dont bother paying the €60 to enter. This is a popularity contest and nothing to do with music. Its a worldwide money racket which seems to be working very well and in fairness, as a money racket, its a smooth operation. Everything runs like clockwork.

Emerjenza are not interested in breaking or exposing bands and are not interested in music full stop. There is no evidence for this given the promotion they do (or dont do for that matter) surrounding the shows and the prizes they offer for winning, not to mention the system by hich bands progress. If you are interested in exposure or furthering your profile dont bother.

Emerjenza are about money money money. We played the semi-finals recently with 7 other bands. For most bands there were a decent turn out and thats at €10 a head for 8 bands' fans - do the math. The promoter on the night was a grumpy little French man - a little off the point but there ya go.

Emerjenza (incl the grumpy lil Frenchman) tell you that after the first round there will be judges as well as the 'hands-up' system - this is blatant bullsh*t, sell more tickets than the other band , you get through whether you're good or dont have a bleedin note in your head. Money money money. Bands who arent selling great amounts of tickets are pushed to the side - and I've spoken to people who are 100% positive that their sound was f*cked with on the night just to make absolutely sure that they didnt get through - not my accusations but very believable.

Other things like people having to pay an extra fiver in the door if they come after 7.30 just compound the situation.

I have no problem in Emerjenza existing but people need to understand what they are. If a bit o fun is what yer after then go for it but I felt like an absolute sh*t asking people to pay hard earned money for inflated door prices on a weeknight for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it show. Vicar St might have been a bit o craic bit its a relief not having to fleece my friends.

    I think i've rambled enough...
yours in music and best o luck to the bands left in the competition
