Just wondering, anybody got 1? I've had one for ages (since they came out - like over 2 years) and thinking of getting a new mp3 player (its too small) but just thinking about it, it's a great piece of kit, with the plug & play thing as well as a regular mp3... If i was to complain it would be the software (iRiver plus or whatever) which sucked all sorts of liathróidí... But thats ok cos i used mediamonky instead:D

As a question, does anybody know any tricks etc. that you can do with them? seen as how i'm looking for a new one (plus it being out of warranty) i'm willing to take a risk...

You might find some interesting info on this H10 forum

The above is a link to the Rockbox forum for Iriver, I believe it runs on the H10. I've put Rockbox on the the H1xx and H3xx models.. Proper playlists,
gapless playback and other very useful features... if only they had it for
    Creative now!

What exactly is rockbox? Does it just replace the existing software with something new? Would you recommend it?? (seen as how you've said you've used it) Could it ruin the player?

I have it running on a h320 and it's brilliant. fast boot times, wav recording, full equaliser, on-the-fly playlists, more codec support (no WMA though), infinitely customisable graphics and much much more. You can also retain the original firmware and boot it up using a different button combo, but you won't want to do that after you get used to rockbox. it's great.

    It's a H10 owners forum.

Pity you're using WMA, Rockbox as stated doesnt support it
due to royalty fees to MS for WMA playback.

    http://www.misticriver.net/wiki/index.php/H10_Rockbox_Information
provides further info on Rockbox and it's benefits on a H10.

Must say I'm seriously impressed by the features on Rockbox and I've
installed it on half a dozen units and everyone prefers it!

Do yourself a favour and switch from WMA to MP3, take a look at
    http://www.bestmp3guide.com/
EAC and the alt preset settings in Lame are much better.
Since I switched to this method I've seriously noticed an improvement
in sound quality. Chances are you'll only rip your music once so you
may as well just do it once properly ;)

Is there a converter to switch over from wma to mp3? Or is this pointless?? (seen as they're already in wma format i'm assuming you won't get any benefit from converting sound quality wise...) and what about size? Cos i only have a 5gb h10 i'd like to fit as much as poss...

As you guessed yourself, no point in converting your existing WMA to MP3.
Whilst it is possible to do so you'll gain nothing by converting from one
already compressed format to another, if anything you'll degrade the sound
    quality further.

If it's less than 5gb of music I'd re-rip the CDs using EAC.
Yes it'll take some time, but how may times will you listen to the music?
Invest the time in ripping properly up front and you'll reap the rewards
for years.. I've approx 60 gb of music ripped in Alt preset extreme MP3 format
and I believe I'll never have to re-rip it again. If I listen to music in 128kps
or other badly compressed format it hurts my ears! I suppose it depends on
how you listen to your music and the quality of the earphones etc..
Trust me I can seriously hear the difference using my Shures!

Yeah, I've rockbox running on my iRiver h120, it's brilliant.
Pity you're using wma alright, as it supports every other format under the sun!
They would if they could, but since its open free firmware, there's nobody to pay the royalties for wma.
Should be boycotting formats that require royalties anyway!
Defo think about switching to mp3 or ogg.

Rockbox is loaded with features and options that aren't on the original firmware. Probably much faster and better on battery too.
You can have your player looking like these:
    http://www.rockbox-themes.org/index.php?res=128x128x16

If you are switching, just make sure you read up on the instructions and follow them carefully.

I have a H140 and one of the reasons I haven't switched over to Rockbox is that I was told that you can't use the remote contol with it. Is this still true or has it been resolved?

Don't use the remote anymore but yeah, last time I did, I was able to control everything with it, so yeah must be working!

Forgot about this thread, You can convert WMA to MP3 in bulk by using dbpoweramp. From what I see, you don't lose too much quality (note: I'm not one of those ****ers that lie about being able to hear stuff that's not there. Audiophile, that's it!) and you can get a couple thousand songs done in an afternoon. All the tag data is preserved too. Google it. As long as your original files are above 160kbps you should be ok quality wise.
