so i was in my sisters house this morning (in her bedroom) and i spotted ants(3 or 4) coming outta her vent

i asked her about it and she said "oh they come in and out looking for stuff for their anthill etc"

    That doesnt sound right

Shes pretty clean- the house is clean- plus her bedrooms on the top floor- long way to travel just for bits fot their anthill

any other reason they could be coming in to the house? The house is about 60 years old

probably just army killer ants, building up their numbers till they're strong enough to attack

might be worth getting some of that ant killer spray in woodies, but this normally doesn't work

might get some more advice on bringing them down here

Ask them to leave kindly? Remember to be polite to them if they do: Thanks ants. Thants. Write that down.

spray is useless, but antsand is brilliant. if the house is old thenm they've explored all the way through the wals to your sistrs pad, it would suggest infestation

You'll have to find where there getting in and get them there with any luck the colony is outside and you wont have to destroy it.

Why were you in your sisters bedroom?

Now that I have turned this into a more personal issue for you, I think the best option would be to follow 6th's advice. If you can't do that, maybe take a year abroad?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

Is your sister really hot? Possibly the ants are just pervs.

Ants follow a scent trail to find their way around, so if you mop the vent, skirting board and floorboards (or carpet) with something strong-smelling, like citronella or peppermint, they should stop coming in; you may have to do this for a few days and repeat if they start coming back.

Chanting and drumming may also help:

    GO, ants, GO
    GO, ants, GO
    Take your queen and
    GO, ants, GO...

Ants are not dirty. They come in search of food basically and lots of people get them coming in around this time of year. Just make sure that there is not food lying around and be careful what you put down to stop them coming in. My cousin was an exterminator and told me although alot of household cleaning liquids (bleach, ect.) will kill the first lot, it will crystalize and the rest will come back and eat that. If you want to get rid of them, the best you can do, is to buy a product made specifically to get rid of Ants

At this time of year ants go searching for food.
They send out scouts, usually two or three ants to search for the availability of food.
If they find any they go back to the nest and report, in which case if they are successful you get a constant trail of ants into your house for a few months during the summer.
Ants are clean and dont carry any diseases.
If your sister doesnt have a lot a dead flies under her bed or a bag of sugar or high carbs food in her bedroom I doubt the scouts will be successful. Hence no ants other than the ones you saw.
They will always find a crack somewhere and make it into a house.
I would suggest getting a grip, and learning about the natural world that surrounds you.

ants cant stand the scent of lavender, pour a bottle lavender essential oils into a spray bottle and spray the openings for a few days and the hill if you can find it then leave lavender in a hot oil burner,
this worked a treat for me

Ants will not cross over a chalk line if that's an option?

    anti-antitude :P

Makes me picture these ants walking around in dark sunglasses with baggy trousers.
She should see a doctor about that.

I laughed so hard at that that my eyes are watering and I'm wheezing.

    Gee thanks.

There seems to be a huge metropolis colony in the cul de sac where I live. For the last few years, they seem to have undertaken a "Moses leading the Israelites" trek through my foundations, excavating (onto my carpet) a couple of bricks worth of sand a year. Last year, they finally made it through to the other side of my house, into the alleyway, so I'm hoping I'll never again have the experience of them attempting to swarm (the flying ones) in my living room. Seriously, I come down one morning and there is a carpet of dead and dying flying ants, all pointed/heading towards the light source of the window. Repulsive!

On a scale like that, I'm all in favour of chemical warfare...

Methinks our best hope against total colonisation would be some sort of civil war between ants, maybe based racially on exoskeleton colour;)

I'm not sure if you have carpenter ants in Ireland or not, but if you do, and these are, then your sister should get them under control as soon as possible. http://www.pestproducts.com/carpenterants.htm

    All together now!

    (Verse1)
The ants go marching two by two,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching two by two,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching two by two,
The little one stopped to chew on you,
    And they all go marching,
Dun dun dun dun, dun dun!

    (Chorus)
*Allegro* Under the door, Across the floor!
*Accelerando* Down the Drain, Into the rain!
Da na na na na na na na na na,
Da na na na na na na na na na!

No bitey ants in central illinois but there are those horrible, stinky odorous ants around. *squish* They don't cause structural damage but are after any grub I leave behind.
