Hey - going inter-railing around germany in a couple of weeks time and am looking for some advice with regards hostels. Not looking for anybody to do the goolge-ing or donkey work for me - more interested in personal recommendations on hostels or budget hotels they have stayed in any of the cities mentioned.
Looking to find places as central as possible with reasonable prices.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks.

We stayed here in Munich and found it reasonably priced. There is another review on it here. The staff were very nice and there was a nice buffet breakfast. Very near the subway which is easy to use and get to the city centre. I booked it through needahotel.com.

Berlin - Heart Of Gold hostel on (I think) Johanastrasse(spelling?)

    Well located.
    Clean.
Great facilities: Common area with a 24hr bar, projector for matches/TV, Pool table, lots of tables/chairs, some couches, internet. Creates a great atmosphere in the evenings to meet people, which is what hostels are all about imho.

Stayed there in June '04 while Interrailing, and again in February '06 on a long weekend with a bunch of friends. And if I was in Berlin again, Id go straight back there - if for nothing else than the atmosphere.

Munich - theres a street near one of the main train stations with I think 3 or 4 hostels on it...not sure of the name though.
But for a more interesting stay, try "The Tent" - its in a field about 6Km out (on a tram line) from the city center. You can stay on a thin mattress in a massive ten for very cheap (€8.50/night inc breakfast in July '05). You simply get a blanket and a foam matress and pick a floor spot(this is it: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/Faltermeyer/Faltermeyers_Rambling_Ways/Munich/IMG_0497.jpg ) or they also have another tent with a huge number of bunk beds for a bit more cash.
The floor/matress thing is ...eh, interesting, you wont sleep past about 9:30am though with people walking around. But theres great showers/toilets to go wake/clean yourself up.
The whole thing is run by, I think, hippies, with some government funding as its mostly solar powered. Theres a couple of campfires outside the tent which are usually good craic at night, even when you wander back from a pub crawl at 2 or 3am...

Hamburg - firstly, I would actually avoid the city - nothing personal to anyone from there, but Berlin/Munich proved much livelier/more interesting cities for me. However, when there, I stayed in a place called either "Instant Sleep" or "Sleepwell" (one of those is in Brussels and the other is in Hamburg - I cant remember which was which).

Hamburg is a good spot and worth checking out! There's a decent hostel in Altona but I don't have the name at the moment. Can post it later!

some good stuff there people thanks alot. there is nothing better than personal recommendations so all help is appreciated.
i have done alot of research on germany and hostels and stuff and it looks like it is handy enough to find a decent hostel in most cities but it is always nice when someone tells you about a decent place.
So if anyone has anymore links or tips etc - its all appreciated.

    thanks!! :)

I'd recommend this one in Berlin:

    Mittes Backpacker

Each room has a different theme, which is pretty cool:

    The Circus Hostel in Berlin

Can't recommend this one highly enough, stayed in dozens of hostels in dozens of countries and this is my all-time favourite. Really friendly staff, clean/comfortable rooms and cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen.

Its been a couple of years since I was there but if they have maintained the same standards it will be excellent......
