The Irish Cup is set to hit the National Basketball Arena again this year. It's run between John Ward and Don Madden. It's a Karate and Ju-jitsu tournament. This year won't see the Grappling event in the Ju-jitsu section. The Irish Cup is in it's Eleventh year and is a fantastic fun day for children and adults. It's an open competition inviting all Kenpo, Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, Ju-jitsu, Kung Fu etc. etc. etc. to attend and participate. Sparring is light contact and it's not kick-boxing rules, it's Kenpo rules, although I'm 90% certain groin strikes are eliminated for obvious reasons.

If you want to come along then do so, have fun and whatever else you want to do that day.

More information can be found about it and contact details on this flyer, it's 800Kb PDF, you will need Acrobat 5 reader or better to view it.

    Kind regards,

What are the rules for the ju jitsu randori? Why is there no grappling division?

I honestly don't know the rules off-hand. You can contact the people on the flyer and ask them yourself. I am just the messenger. :D

Not a very pleasant messenger it has to be said.
Some people are going to say that it's a good tournament, others will moan about it. I don't really care if you like it or not or if you like the people who are running it.

Rules for randori off the top of my head:

Time limit i think is 3 minutes

Punches to the body only while standing, no punches at all on the ground, each punch landed = 1 point. There are two officials with clickers to record strikes.

Kicks to the body and head while standing, same score and scoring method.

After 30 seconds you have close distance and bring the fight to the ground, a clean takedown/throw = 3 points

No striking while you have a hold of you opponent

On the ground most submissions are legal, not sure about twisting knee or ankle submissions. Submission = 3 points.

If you can pin or hold a dominant position for 10 seconds you score 1 point.

    No closed guard.

Weight and belt divisions are all over the shop, fighters aren't weighed and matchups are made up as they go along, but it's a bit of fun if you like competing. The grappling division was one of the biggest evenst in terms of people competeing so it's strange that they did away with it. Anyway hopefully the helps clear some things up.

    Whats Duo Jiu jitsu?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Hank_Scorpio

Two disciplines make up competitive ju-jitsu. Duo system has the two members of a team show self-defense techniques against a random series of grips, strangle holds, embraces, punches, kicks and armed attacks with stick or knife. Fighting system is the one-on-one combat between athletes from opposing teams in different weight classes.
