Programs and Process Lock

    Hi,

Hope someone can help me because there is probably a very simple solution. I use my computer for video editing but also for general use. I've set up a seperate user profile for editing so I can cut down on programs using up system resources such as AntiVirus, Windows Defender, and all non essential background processes I need while editing. I have 2 gigs of RAM which sounds like loads but the footage I use is pretty big. In task manager RAM usage runs at about 300mgs but I'd like to cut it down to about 100. Software such as Skype, AVG, DLA, and system proccesses like MsMpEng, and EvtEng arent essential. What I'd like to find is a program that locks these processes out while I'm editing in this profile but would allow me to adjust it for my regular profile. Anyone out there able to recommend something?

    Thanks

A lot of that 300MB is taken up by all the Windows services, which you can't really configure differently per user. I suppose you could run a batch file stopping certain services (e.g. net stop "<service>" will stop a service). TBH I don't there's that much of a problem - the processes that aren't being currently used are going to have a lower priority than your video editing or whatever so they will (hopefully) be first to go to the swapfile when you start running out of physical RAM.

There is a program called "Process Tamer". It will lower processes that are trying to grab more of the CPU vs other applications. It can also be configured to allow certain apps more time then others. So if you have multiple logins its just a matter of telling Process Tamer that Application X gets little to no process time on that login.

Incidently if you have SkyPE installed and your machine is a reasonably good spec then SkyPE will turn your machine into a router for other peoples calls when SkyPE is idle for you. More details on it in wikipedia.
