Running Ultimate with dual core Intel Centrino Duos (1.67 and 1.66), 667 FSB, and 2 gigs memory. Runs slower than XP-2. Have already dumped all the commercial junk that comes with MS, plus cleaned and defragged. Too new to benefit from removing restore points. Will not consider overclocking cause of potential laptop heat problems. Any suggestions on how to speed the OS up without compromising security?

    * Make sure you're not using Norton as your anti-virus protection
    * Run 'msconfig' and, under the Startup tab, deselect unessential applications from loading at boot time
    * Your laptop may have a 5,400 rpm HDD. If you've money to burn, you may like to buy a replacement 7,200 rpm HDD.

Thanks for the reply ethernet. No, not using Norton. Current AV draws very little, except when downloading new definitions.

Will check out the bootup for nonessentials.

Yes, have dual HDDs that run at 5,400 with over 200 gigs between them (much more than I need at present, but got a grand deal from a closing computer store). On manufacturer's warranty and am a real money saver, so a faster HDD configuration is not in the budget for now. Only one game loaded (more pretty soon), and keep most of my confidential info on thumb drives.

Also use CCleaner whenever appropriate, as the MS VISTA cleaning function does not clean it all.

Also see this thread regarding speeding up Vista.

As you're security conscious, the next laptop you get may well have a biometic scanner for your finger.
