Ballaghmore Castle by bus

Right, I need to get to Ballaghmore Castle by bus from Dublin. It's between Borris in Ossory and Roscrea. Bus Eireann will get me to Roscrea, but are there stops in Borris in Ossory or closer to Ballaghmore?

Am I as well off going to Roscrea and getting a taxi to the castle? The maps i'm looking at suggest its about two or three miles from Roscrea, is that accurate?

    Help appreciated.

BE stops in Borris-in-ossary, isnt it still the location of a "comfort" stop?

The castle is right on beside the road, I'd ask the bus driver if he'd let you off at the castle, there's a good wide hard shoulder so you might be lucky.A Taxi from Roscrea will'll cost you probably as much as the ticket from Dublin. I'm not from Borris, but I'm pretty sure there's local hackneys operating, maybe get off in Borris and ask at the hotel for a hackney number.

All the Dub-limerick busses (bar the non-stop service)stop in both towns but there is no stop in between. The Castle is nearer to Roscrea than Borris and Roscrea is a much bigger town that is sure to have a taxi service so you'd be better off there than Borris.

As Bogger said, ask the Driver when you get on in Dublin if he would let you off at the castle. By rights the driver shouldn't but many would do.

There is no chance that a bus would stop to pick you up on the side of the road for the return journey however so you would have to get to Roscrea or Borris.

Remember the set maximum charges now apply nationwide so based on the distance it should be at most €10 so yes it will probably be similar to the bus fare from Dublin.

The best bet would be to get the number of a local taxi so you can ring before you get to Roscrea if the driver won't drop you at the Castle.

I am from the borris area and I can confirm there is no hackney service in the area. You are much better off to go to roscrea and get a hackney from there. There are a few listed in the phone book. There are no taxis or ranks in Roscrea at all.

What is the distance like from Roscrea? If the weather is all alright would it walkable?

I've found three hackney phone numbers, so I should be sorted anyway. Cheers lads.

Your looking at a 4 mile walk. Certainly do able on a nice day. Be careful as the N7 is a very busy road, personally I wouldn't do it.

I always thought the castle was further than that from Roscrea, been a while since i travelled that way, I usually head over the mountain via glenletter than go road via Roscrea/Birr.

Castle must almost be in Offaly then?

It is very much in Laois! :)

The N7 crosses the border about 5 times on that stretch.

From my OSI maps, it's less than a 1 mile inside the Laois Offaly border, and about the 1 1/2 miles from the Tipp border.

It's in Laois though, so it's not worth visiting :-)

Agreed! I live only 4 miles from it and I wouldn't darken it's doors.
