CMOS Battery & Power Supply

    Hey all,
Weird intermitent problem i have. My PC errr.. powers on by itself. Not regularly or ina pattern but e.g... can be once in two weeks or once a month pattern, theres no rhyme or pattern save that it happens rarely but enough that it merits attention.

One of the first things i did was check out the soft boot options. Restore on AC power loss amongst other things was set to off, so its definetly not a problem there.

So.. i decided if i can't track down the cause of the problem i'll just run around it...:D my PSU has a cut off switch which can easily be toogled on or off.. so my question is this... does the CMOS battery get drained faster without a persistent power supply? Just in case i should start stocking up on spares;).

That doesn't sound to good if it is powering on of it's own accord.

Is it a normal PC if so it would be a lot safer to just replace the PSU with something that is working correctly.

(I assume you checked the case power on switch & it is okay)

Are you sure you dont have a bios setting that gets your pc to power on from network activity? I know before on my old pc with dialup the pc used to power itself on everytime the phone rang and i just disabled the setting in the bios and it was fine then, there is also an option for booting on lan activity i believe.

Yeah it could be funkyness from Wake-on-LAN or something. Some BIOSes also have a setting for turning the PC on at a specific time, though I've only ever seen these with a daily timer and not some way of it turning on only once every 2 weeks or so...

    It should last years.

also could be possible that a powersurge is causing it to boot, ie, wake on power.
