    Hi All,

Apologies in advance for a dumb question that I'm sure everyone who plays poker should no the answer to, but what is running ante? at the moment in the IO the blinds are 30k/60k with a running ante of 5k.

An ante is a forced bet in which each player places an equal amount of money or chips into the pot before the deal begins

I know what an ante is, it's the running ante that's confusing me, surely everyone doesn't have to put into the pot, do they? I thought that was the whole idea behind blinds.

you are confusing blinds and antes.

Running ante is where ALL players put in the same amount before the deal.

The blinds are then posted as normal

Blinds are blind bets, e.g. bets that are placed before cards are dealt. Antes are chips going directly into the pot before cards are dealt, thus unlike blinds antes are not part of any betting. There are more chips in the pot this way without increasing the minimum bet (which is the big blind). Its done to make people play hands instead of sit and wait for big hands.

"Ante" is short for "running ante". Technically "ante" is for one person, for example in a dealer's choice cash game where the dealer pays an ante to choose his/her game. And "running ante" is where all players put in an ante, for example in seven card stud. However, saying "ante" is common for both situations, since when paying Texas hold'em the only possible ante would be a running ante.
