Trans Canada/USA Road Trip

I'm currently based in Vancouver on a year working visa with a few friends but we want to explore as much as possible in North America while we are taking a year out. Our rough plan right now is to stay in Vancouver working until mid October and then head off on a massive road trip.

We would really like to head east across Canada and visit the Rockies taking in Banff, Jasper etc and then continue on East over as far as Nova Scotia with stops in Toronto and Montreal. From the east we want to go into the States and visit NYC and Philadelphia possibly Chicago. I know this is extremely ambitious but no point in planning these things unless you plan big :) We want to continue west to Las Vegas (really want to see the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon) and then onto San Francisco. The last leg would be to return to Vancouver to pick up our stuff and use our return flight we already have booked from there in December.

I would really love some advice from anyone who has travelled by rail or car on a similar or part of this kind of journey. We are doing it on a low budget and I realise we wont be able to do everything we want but sure we can try. If anyone has done this by car did they have trouble finding a cheap car and also getting insurance which I think is mandatory? Should we just find cheap flights and skip all the in between bits?

Any advice would be appreciated on how to undertake/plan a trip like this.

Dude, take out an atlas and have a look at what you're saying. Pay particular attention to the scale.:D

Nah, seriously, I really hope you pull it off because I really want to do it myself some day and I will have your brains to pick! I can't see how this will be possible on a super low budget. There's definitely going to be some flying required.

Thanks for the vote of confidence :)

There seems to be a serious shortage of info on this kind of trip so we're now thinking of doing one of the Moose Network trips in Canada. Seems like a great way of seeing the west and east coast but it looks like we'll have to skip central Canada and take a flight either from Calgary or Vancouver over to Toronto.

Still haven't a notion how we'll do the USA stretch of it....anyone have any ideas???
