Taking ages to pick up GPS signal

How long does it take your Sat nav to initially pick up a GPS signal?

I have an AA navigator and it takes between 8-12 mins to pick up a signal which i think is crap. Other than that its an excellent unit but taking so long to find a gps is unacceptable.

Any tips to help it pick up earlier or how long doe sit take your system?

Do you have a shielded/tinted windscreen? Have you tried inside and outside your car? An external antennae may help.

That is a very long time. Mine would take at absolute worst, 1min - 2mins.

what krusty said is true, some renaults and possibly fords with a heated screen can affect the gps system

No its a mazda 323f doesnt have any heated windscreen or anything??

I know its a joke, but only mine eems to do that ive talked to a couple of people with it and they dont ahve any problems picking up the signal.

Is there a better position on the windscreen to put it (i currently have it over the centre console)

I will try it outside and see how long it takes

Whats the exact unit you are using.

I was repairing a Navman 3400 GPS for a friend but from cold it could take between 15 to 45 mins for a fix.

With my N520 a fix takes about 1 to 2 mins from cold.

My BT-77 is hot in 2 mins most times.

Can you take it outside the car and try and get a fix for comparison purposes?

It can take that long to get a good fix the very first time you turn the unit on when it still has to download the almanac of where all the satellites are in the sky. But unless you are leaving it powered off for long periods of time between uses, weeks or months probably, then it should not take that long.
