    Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a scooter for short trips around the area and maybe the occasional commute (Bray to City centre). I don't have a huge amount of experience - have driven scooters and quads a few times before on holidays, and that's about it.

I have only started looking into this, so excuse my stupid questions.

I am not 100% sure of how the licensing works. I have a full driving licence (B I presume) since 2001. Is this any use to me at all for a scooter, or do I have to start from scratch again?

The kind of thing I have in mind is the retro looking scooter; what are the good brands to go for (vespa?), and what kind of cash are you talking about for a decent example?

    thanks,

    Eoin

Well with a full (B) License you are entitled to a category (M) vehicle. This is a 50cc automatic which can not go above a speed of 45KPH. This however means it is very slow in all aspects. If you want, you can apply for a provisional A or A1. The A1 will allow you to drive up to a 125cc vehicle (manual or automatic) The A will allow you to drive a bike of any type that is restricted or below/equal to the set power out puts. Then 2 years after you get your full License, you are able to ride an Unrestricted bike of any CC.

Thanks for that - think I may take the time to go down the A/A1 route. I'm not the lightest, so 50cc is unlikely to get me moving at all!

So, if I go for something under 125cc, pending provisional license and affordable insurance and all that - is something like this a good option? Aprilia Habana Custom 125 on adverts.ie
