    Folks,
anyone able to help me with this?
I want to practice some punches and kicks against a solid object like a punchbag/makiwara/whatever... but I live in a rented house and can't install anything from the ceiling/on the wall. Is there something free-standing I can buy that would do the job? I don't have a ortune to spend either :(

You could look into a wavemaster. Lot's of freestanding punchbags and kickbags. Only thing is, they typically do cost alot. 150 - 200 quid :(

Check argos or something to see if you can find a cheapish one. Make sure it's sturdy and durable.

I had the same dilemma in my previous house. You can get Punch bahs that are supported by a frame held in place via weights (argos have them). Or you could get some kind of B.O.B. body opponent bag. It weighs 17 stone when the base is filled so you can go full out on it. I'm sure there are other solutions but that's all I can think about at the mo'.

    Cheers,

    B.

PS - Don't know how good the Argos ones actually are there may be better quality ones available - but they'd prolly be more expensive.

I'm not sure if you can get them in Ireland yet. I actually ordered mine from th UK some time ago (from bytomic). They are quite expensive, but are well worth the cash. It's an excellent piece of kit if you are into RBSD - I use mine all the time now.

    Here he is:

There is no need to go for the "BOB XL" (he's the one with the funky shorts :)) As you can just put a pad on the stand of the regular BOB (the one in the pic) so you can still do your knee strikes - much cheaper too!

But have a look around there might be cheaper places.

    Cheers,

    B.

PS - great service from Bytomic too..

    thanks...
so you would recommend something like this?:

    Punchman

I was thinking maybe this - cos it's good and solid and heavy!

    Punchbag

    :confused::confused:

It depends on what your after, do you generally, punch or use open hands? If you want something for sheer impact or just punching get the punch bag set up.

However if you want something for more for RBSD type training, then get a BOB. I'd stay well clear of those "punch man" yokes to be honest. As I've used them and I really don't think they're great to hit (pricey too!). Also you need mitts if you hit a punch man as it's made of hard plastic - you could break your knuckles very easily.

I like the BOB cause of it's anatomical features and that it's made of a soft vinyl composite (very strong don't worry :)) - with means you can not only practice striking with, open hands, going for specific targets, neck locks, gouging, biting :). And of course you can punches the bejasus out of it too. It's good for striking (I have a punch bag also - I like to use both).

    Hope it helps,

    B.

Yeah go for the BOB dummy, I've found them to be brilliant from empty hand work to stick work, it's extremely durable and easy on the knuckles.

Well, I have a voucher for €250 for Argos, so as much as the BOB looks good, I think I'll go for the bag. As you say, I would like something for impact - just to get used to actually encountering a solid object instead of practising moves in the air. I couldn't really afford the BOB - but I'm gonna hold on to that link and look at getting one some time in the future when I can afford it. Thanks for your help guys!:)

I'm mad to get one of those BOBs too. They seem much cheaper from websites in the States. But I can't find a website that will ship to here, and I'm sure the cost of that would be massive.

How much do these things weigh when they're not filled? Could you buy one on a holiday and carry him back? Would you need to buy a ticket so he can sit beside you?

They are actually quite light... But they are a big awkward size.

I owned one of those... well technically I still do, but the shaft is broken, so I wouldn't recommend one of those.

Ye Ive heard bad things about the Punchman too. Personally, Im looking at getting a BOB.

I remember my Kenpo instructor saying something similar - that he gave it a side kick and the stand broke (and he had not got it very long). I've also heard similar reports about the fabled "spar-pro".

One of Lee's students said to me; that Lee virtually punched the head off an old "spar-pro" - it was only hanging by a thread apparently. "Class"... :D:D

I've not heard any bad reports about the B.O.B. in that respect. Mine still is as good as new.
