I need extra storage for the computers at home here ,I want to start using an external harddrive standalone on the wifi.
    Anyone recommended?

You do understand it'll be VERY slow right?

Someone mentioned this to me ,thinking about it ,maybe a large buffer of 100mb would speed things up on the unit.

I know initially it would be slow syncing with the unit ,but a realtime transfer of designated folders wouldn't be too slow ,for say two machines ,would it

It depends how much data you're moving about. 802.11g wifi's signalling rate is 54Mbps at best. The actual data rate you'll get is about half that again. Say 27Mbps. 27Mbps is 3.37MB/s which is rubbish compared to the speed of a local hard disk or even to a 100Mbit wired network connection. And that's better than you're likely to get in real life conditions. I don't think I've ever got files transferring faster than 2.4MB/s on my own 802.11g network.

What about a program that half hourly compressed information into files that were sent to a back up.
The whole reason behind me thinking all this ,I want to be able to have a backup of information on a drive ,without needing to have a dedicated pc on all the time.
The thought of accessing information from any machine at anytime and being able to check the backup status .

It makes sense to me ,a wireless network should be exactly that:)
