    hi,

iv recently moved to the us, wash dc, from ireland and have been trying to get voip working on my apartment wireless connection.

the connection is about 1-2meg, it is wireless throughout the complex which doesnt help.

I think that 1-2meg is enought bwidth for voip. but im a getting a very poor quality line, when i use smart 076, voipstunt, even skype.

Would voip diff software/provider help or is it jsut plain lack of bandwidth.

    really appreciate any advice!!

    thanks

    mike

As you're on a shared wireless network it could possibly be data collision that is causing your problem not bandwidth.

yeah that could be it because its a shared connection for the whole floor, maybe 20 users or more. Also i did a QOS check and its really variable , sometimes only 40 %.

I reckon if i had a single connection through my own router it would be much better. Im working on this now.

vewry annoying though. nobody uses voip here - and they think they are technologically advanced!!

    thanks

Whos the ISP...Could be some traffic shaping or throttling involved...

G.729 VOIP is less than 10K/12kbps

Very often the jitter and QOS is too poor rather than the bandwidth, unless you are using G711. Don't use G.711
