    Can anyone tell me if this is normal. I was getting 900 and something last night???

    a misconfigured exchange maybe, get yoru carrier to resubmit your package to eircom for checking .

    No that wouldn't be it.

    Eircom use RADSL , the R standing for rate adaptive.
    So if you are further from the exchange then most people or have a poor line then the adsl will lower the speed. (which is better then it just disconnecting)
    Also not having the dsl filters set-up correctly can cause it to lower the speed, so check that.

    Unlikely. Contention wouldn't affect the sync speed, just the download speed.
    Anything change in your house OP, like new devices (Sky box, fax, etc) connected to the phoneline?
    Did you try rebooting the modem?
