Problem installing Epson Stylus DX4850 Printer/Scanner

I'm having problems trying to install an Epson Stylus DX4850 all in one printer/scanner on my dell dimension 8400. I had no problem installing it when I first got it last year, but I had to replace my harddrive recently and its just not installing. The troubleshooter is of no use.

From the epson installation cd, if I choose the Recommended Installation option it will automatically install the scanner driver and all the crappy epson software, but for some reason it can't install the printer driver as it doesn't recognise the usb connection, regardless of which of the 8 pc usb ports it is connected to. The only way to install the printer driver is to choose the Custom Installation option on the cd, and manually select which usb port the printer is connected to.

So the printer and scanner drivers are installed now, printer is printing fine but scanning is a different story. When I click on Epson Scan I get the warning 'Epson Scan Cannot be started', the same thing happens when I open the Epson Copy Utility software, but my epson scanner is visible in the scanner drop down box in this software. A box with
Could not connect to the scanner. Check the connections to the scanner, then select the scanner again
is beside the custom copy button in Epson Copy Utility

Even when I open Programs > Accessories > Scanner & Camera Wizard the Epson scanner isn't there, only my logitech webcam.

In the Printers and faxes Menu the printer is installed but when I try to manually add a scanner the only options for Epson are a couple of digital cameras, with no option for windows to update the list nor will it install from the cd when I select install from D drive.

Does anyone have a solution? I tried downloading the drivers off the Epson site and it was the same story.

    Thanks

what operating system do you have.
if its 2000/xp hardware detection wizard should pick up
device when you plug usb cable into pc after u started it.
there is a popup window from task tray telling you 'new device
    detected'.
let us know is your pc picking the printer/scanner up, first,
then you can worry about the driver. you may need to Properly
uninstall driver and put it on again before this printer works for you. you
may have done things out of step when you put driver on first time.

    Thanks for replying.
Edit/ Got it sorted, if you google Epson Scan Cannot be started you'll find its a pretty common problem.

I basically followed the last posts directions http://www.photo-i.co.uk/BB/viewtopic.php?p=25439&sid=94e6d61ce7b2c02ba3da64b5f57fc8da
