After Hours - Underated Martin Scorsese Film.

I have been meaning to post this for a while but only remembered after watching it again tonight.

I was wondering if anyone else has seen the film After Hours starring Griffin Dunne and directed by Martin Scorsese circa 1985. It was made during the 80's when Scorsese was at low point and was disillusioned with the direction the film industry was going. Its a gritty dark comedy with great casting and some excellent dialogue.

Anyways, its the story of Paul Hackett (Dunne) who meets a girl named Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) one night in a New York coffee shop. After Hackett getting her number, he plucks up the courage to visit her goes at close to midnight. After he leaves her apartment though, the film begins to unravel and tells the tale of one mans struggle getting around a dark and paranoid New York to get back to his own apartment.

Its a fantastic dark comedy, probably one of my all time favourite films with superb casting and a very unique feel and look to it. I don't think I have ever seen a film quite like it, and its a surprising departure by Scorsese, who at time stayed away form comedies, directed mob themed films and usually always cast De Niro. It really captures that feeling you have about being alone in a big city crossed with the feeling you get when you're walking home real late after a night out.

Anyways, I just wanted to put that up there to see if anyone else has seen this gem, and if so what do you think of it, and to anyone who hasn't seen it I highly recommend tracking it down, Laser on Georges St. probably has it.

Its a great film alright. I rented it not really knowing much about it and was impressed by its bleak "nightime of the soul" as Griffith Dunne gets pushed and pulled by forces beyond his control.

By the way of you want to check out another 80s gem the King of Comedy is recommended!

    Mike.

Anyone else think that the music used in the film is absolutely spot on in terms of conveying a mood and feeling.

Definitely great use of music, especially 'Is that all there is?". One of my all time favourites too. Truly genius the way it mixes real bleakness and despair with comedy. Career high for Dunne.
