According to this review PS3 prices may be falling, although perhaps not an official Sony-sanctioned price cut.

Play.com are selling the PS3 for £399.99 and including a HDMI cable and Click on Blu-Ray disc. Just thought I'd let people know.

Was the PS3 EVER £464?

£399 is still the best part of 600 Euros. Bring a few old games into a shop and it won't be hard to get that €30 or so discount.

Other retailers will just give you vouchers instead. I hope play subsidise shipping, because the PS3 isn't light on it's feet.

...and inspite of what retailers charge, a HDMI cable can be picked up from eBay for about 10 including post....

In short: That's not really much of a price cut.

The PS3 has been retailing here (Cambridge and the rest of the UK) for £425, so £399.99 + HDMI cable is a discount :p That said, I still can't afford to buy one!

...in much the same way retailers offer subsidised games with console launches.
Following that reasoning, the PS3 was discounted as soon as it was launched in the U.K, as were other consoles.

YES they do.

Just make sure before you go to the checkout you have clicked on the EURO flag.

They changed the order system about 6 months or more ago. Before you could buy in sterling, but now if your in ireland you must go to the checkout with the price in Euro.

I have over 29 pages on my order history, errr I think they ship to ireland alright ;)

True there are odd exceptions, yet things like pc components, hard drives etc, they will ship.

They wil ship a PS3 regardless.

Wow, I just tried to order a PS3 from play.com after reading your post and guess what. Even after selecting the € pricing I get this:
play.com wrote:

Amazing that, isn't it.

I just tried it with the PS3 and 3 game bundle and it went through  (Got the confirmation email too - cancelled it though immediately :D)

Tried it with an iPod nano and got:

"This item can only be delivered to a UK address.
New Apple iPod Nano 8GB Black (Electronics)"

Weird.

I was looking on the playasia site. I was going to buy a PS3 game. And at the bottom it said, they won't ship it to europe. Why's that?

Probably because Sony put Liksang out of business for selling into Europe like that.

Don't know that was the price in most stores ranged from €290 to €330, couldn't leave it behind for that.

rumor had it that the 20gb didnt come with wifi, something I relaly wanted. given how trivial it is (and sony documented) to upgrade the drive I would have rather gotten that and tossed in a much larger one instead. Too late for me but I would like to know anyway :)

its hong kong everything is cheap there. Additionally, movies and ps1/ps2 games are region locked on it, so dont expect to just run to xtravision and get a blueray movie. Although there might be ways around that, those ways should they exist, ahem, shouldnt be discussed here.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭Villain

The 20GB version doesn't have WiFi or the card reader, not something that bothered me at all, I have a wired connection to the PS3 and I have my Xbox 360 connected to my PC so I can watch all my movies and music. The PS3 is just for gaming and the Blu Ray movies.

ahh ok, my internet is shared for the apartment and is wifi based. since I would have to either run a cable to some wifi enabled device or use wifi direct, and didnt want to mess with a usb adapter (which likely would only work with linux anyway) I opted for the 60gb.

Now that prices are falling (I saved about 200 EUR on mine vs what they go for here by getting it from the US) I can buy more games (have 7 so far, gah I am spending too much on this :P

It's a joke. They have no problem sending a console for €619 but they wont let me buy a pair of headphones for €40.

Just tried it there, there's more security required to buy a console.

get it posted, even with VAT its still cheaper. Although do take notice that dvd/ps1/ps2 stuff is region locked, and that isnt this region so you will either have to deal with that seperately or you will have to buy all media from there as well.

I've a mate going to Taiwan this month....I suppose they'd be similarly priced there? Would everything work as if it were bought in Europe?

it probably wont have the UK/IE plug, but it should be a world power adapter, so a quick trip to maplins or wherever to get an adapter for a few euro should do it.

movies (blueray/dvd) wont play because they are the wrong region. ps1/ps2 games wont play because they will be the wrong region. Some movies may not be region coded and they will work, there are websites that list which titles have open region coding.

ps3 games will play because while there is region support, its not enabled on anything, and sony is trying to keep it that way (I did read that they ultimately left it upto the game developers however, but since its the same game everywhere they arent likely to care since it allows for more consumers to buy the same product and becomes more cost effective).

Wifi will generally work (there are different numbers of channels allowed in different countries, and to a point different power levels allowed so generally it should work, but you may not get channel 13 or 14 (I am unsure if 14 is EU approved)). Gotta get the 60gb for wifi anyway, if you get the 20gb and replace the disk (2.5" laptop sata drive 5400 rpm (no performance boost for a faster one) replacement is easy) if you need more storage you will not have wifi.

Other than that yeah it should work the same :)

Thanks for the explanation

np. there may be other issues, those are just the ones I know of. And there are ways to deal with the movies, the games maybe, maybe not, currently there isnt anything available that is viable (ie an emulator) due to the lack of drivers to the video hardware.

I am sure that the region code is trivial to change once you know where it is. Personally I disagree with region codes, movies should be released globally, to release them in different areas only increases the likelyhood of piracy. If they are going to have them, I think they should do like many of the rom drives, let you change it some limited number of times so that if you buy one there you can set it to here and watch movies without a problem. What about all those people that move from one region to another? Buying a new ps3 isnt a viable solution.

At least the ps3 games so far havent had any region coding, so that much is easy to deal with :)

I just got the US version delivered today, on the case it reads 120v 60hz, and it coems with a US/JP plug. My guess is that the hong kong version, while cheaper has similar limitations, which means that you have to get not only a plug converter but a power converter too, which adds to the cost. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00yEe0qfcOs shows someone powering it on in what seems to be france (given the receptacle) which implies that it will work fine. Worst case I DOA it :D

From http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=64258
Q: Can I use a PS3 that says 120V (US and Japan) in Europe (220V) without a step-down converter and vice versa?
A: Yes. The PS3s internal power supply is universal. It will take any voltage between 110V-240V, regardless of what it says on the PS3.

It also reads NTSC which means that it may not be totally compatible with PAL sets. It was my understanding that they didnt use anything RF based, and so that might just refer to the lines of resolution in simple analogue mode. If that is the case, it would be foolish of sony to have made regional models, since that part of the circuitry can switch to anything. I have no idea what it will mean if you are doing HD stuff with it, the lines of resolution are the same in the US and here for HD (720 or 1080) so that may be compatible.

Again from http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=64258
Q: Can I play imported DVDs?
A: Not if they don't belong to the same region as your PS3 is locked to. If they are region free, thy must be either NTSC or PAL, you can't play a PAL DVD on an NTSC PS3 and vice versa.

This is a *software* limit not a hardware one as far as the drive is concerned (I still am unsure about the AV out but that *shouldnt* be a problem). In linux for example, you are likely to be able to play anything with mplayer or something else.

Just a little FYI.

I am going to play with it today, gee what are the odds I just got it :) and will post a follow up on whether smoke came spewing forth and it fried or whether it works just fine.

Ok, just to fully clarify this:

I ordered - for my brother - a PS3 with the hdmi cable and "Click" (whatever that is) and it went through the order system. It was marked as "Posted 11/04/2007" on the Order History

Just got an email now:

Dear (Nyum Nyum)

Thank you for your recent order.

Unfortunately we have been unable to fulfil your order for which we
apologise. This is because the courier we use to dispatch this item cannot
deliver to the country you have specified for delivery.

Due to a system anomaly your card was charged. We have arranged for a full
refund to be issued to the credit/debit card currently on your Play
account. This will show on your card statement within 3 working days.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused to
yourself in this matter, and thank you for your patience and
understanding.

Kind Regards

Play"

The Order History page now has it is as "Not Received: 12/04/2007"

So there you go. Definitely NOT able to order a PS3 from Play.com

The URLs are correct, it is world power despite what the sticker on the bottom says. So travel away with your ps3 (or just order one from far off lands). My ps3 is happily upgrading its firmware as we speak.
