Is it just me or is NTL rubbish?

What's the craic with NTL? no seriously?!?! I was watching Man Utd playing Roma the other night via NTL while talking to a mate on the phone. We were talking away about the match. Suddenly a ball was whipped across from the wing then Rooney got on the end if it and scored. Now my point is in all the time my friend and i were watching the game and indeed the goal my NTL was about 5 seconds behind his. He cheered for the goal ages before i had even seen it. He also uses NTL and lives just like me in the greater Dublin area.

If you have any ideas please let me know.

I hardly see how that qualifies it as being rubbish but he was probably on mmds and you were on digital no? Well theres a bigger delay in the digital than the analog for some reason.

NTL MMDS is digital only. Analog cable maybe.

There is an delay caused by the buffer needed to encode & Decode video in MPE2. Also occasionally the source feed can be from satellite which can add an extra second (90,000km round trip).

Similar situation happened when I was talking to my friend on who was watching Sky Sports a few weeks ago. I was listening to the game on the radio so Sky must be rubbish too.

Radio and analogue is the way forward !

Well for a start the sound delay isn't a problem due to the fact one of you were watching analogue and the other DTV. As said above the processing of the DTV signal incurs a slight delay.
What number of other problems are you having??

Its just rubbish, you are correct. Plus my box crashes several times a week, meaning I have to reach in behind it, quite difficult and unplug it and wait a bit and then plug back in. Thats a complete pain. Also its slow updating listings. Im waiting for my 12m months to be up and gop back to SKY.

Every digital signal is delayed by some amount every time it goes through a processor. So by the time you see a goal , no matter if its on satellite, cable, MMDS, DTT or Internet, it will be delayed by some amount. No two processors run at the same exact same speed. So even the exact same receiver model will have a difference. Of course older models with older processors are slower. Even heat can slow the processor down.

Also dont forget that your telephone exchange is probable a digital exchange, so you will experience delay there and even more so if you were on a mobile phone.

So what you have experienced is typical.

As for the analogue V's Digital debate, well analogue is better regarding speed, but thats it.

Picture quality, well you have HD on digital. You could have an analogue version but would probably take up so much bandwidth that it wouldnt be worth it. Digital save on bandwidth, so you wont have the larger selection. Just look at the difference with NTL's 2 services. So no Sky Sports 1,2,3,Xtra,News or Setanta Sports Irl,1 2, etc, or several Discovery Channels. Only 1 or 2 channels of each category.

Interference is a big problem to and if it is decoded, it will interfere with the picture.

I'm very thankful for the digital TV era and its improving all the time. :)

Japan had 1125 line analogue HD. That is in fact where the very stupid for Europe 1080 line comes, from the visible lines on 1125
    525 lines = 480 visible
    625 lines = 576 visible
