RPM question

Long time lurker, only recently returned to the Linux fold.

Anyway, having installed Ubuntu 6.10, I decided to dust off my old Quake 2 CDs from way back in 2000 to install the game. The install packages are all rpms, but for some reason, kpackage gives an "unknown package" error and Archive Manager gives "archive type not supported".

I'm not sure what to do next. Is there an older version of rpm manager that would read them? I'm fairly sure the files themselves are ok, I copied them from the cd to my home directory without problem.

rpm is for Red Hat and all its derivatives. Ubuntu uses the Debian package management system. Quick google through up this site for converting rpm to dpkg (the package type used by Ubuntu, i think) http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/23/installing-using-an-rpm-file/ .

alien is the program that does it, I think anyway.

But Kpackage and Archive Manager both state the can read rpm's:confused:

I'll give alien a go and see how I get on.

I've no idea how to install quake2, but I bet you can do it on ubuntu without rpm/alien
    stephen@deepthought:~$ aptitude search quake
p quake2 - improved version of id Software's Quake II
p quake2-data - Installer for Quake II data files
p quake3-data - Installer for Quake III Arena data files

    Look into those packages.

    Hmmm, didn't know about that.

I've installed it now, by the looks of it, and now I am getting the following error:

    Error: Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx

    Must investigate this further. Thanks!

Suggests your data didn't install properly...

The RPM format changed fairly significantly a few years ago.
That could be where the problem is coming from with the archive manager.
