the other day i noticed a sort of halo effect on a photograph i took where there was a good expanse of sky in the photograph.
I thought it was flare at first but the lens had a hood on it and the shot was facing north away from the sun! then i assumed it might have been something to do with the lens, blooming or some such thing but on further investigation having tried other lenses its still present. I'm assuming now it's the sensor :(

Anyone ever see something like that? I tried to check Canon's ireland website this evening to see who does servicing for them here but their site is down. Any info on who their service agents here are?

I'm going to assume you've taken lots of shots and its on all of them, right?

yeah took loads and tried at various different settings too, with some it's not as noticable as others but it's there!
I'm at a loss as to what it is, i suppose the cost of a new sensor would be as much as i paid for the whole camera

ok i'm off to the pub!!!

ok the visit to the pub alleviated the problem in the short term but unfortunately after a quick check today the issue still remains.

The Canon Ireland web site is still down, so does anyone know who their service agents are? and a rough guess on how much a full frame sensor would be?

ring Canon UK. I think they handle all camera repairs. Be prepared for alot of zero's I'd say.

I wonder if it'd be crap on the sensor... maybe a bloody good scrub would sort it out?

Have you tried also some other lens? Just to be sure that it is not caused by lense (and fingerptint on the inner side of the lense made during manipulation with it).

A failed shutter usually appears as a white arc from top to bottom through pictures. A failed secondary mirror manifests as either total loss of autofocus or as pictures with the bottom 3/4 or so being black.

Either way, a repair at Canon will cost around $250 plus shipping in the US.

    this was a quote for a 20D.

I got the answer from here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php

try cleaning the sensor if you can but do the lens and bits first. Dry first then wet.

ok i've cleaned the sensor and the lens and theres no change, so i think Border Fox is onto something there.
I'd prefer it to be the shutter rather than the sensor. i read a post on a forum about 2 years ago that a replacement sensor was something like $4000 in the US. I shudder to think what it'd cost here

At the moment it's an expensive paperweight :(

either way it's going to cost - I guess thats one of the disadvantages of buying second hand. I eventually found the address to the Irish support site so iv'e sent them a mail asking for their advice on dealing with this.

    oh well....

thanks everyone for the suggestons etc

    :)

I have no idea what's causing it Fionn. Good luck, I hope it isn't too serious.

ok i got my camera back!
top marks to Borderfox, it was indeed a failed shutter. They replaced the whole unit so effectively i'm at zero actuations. It had to be shipped to the UK for the repair work, when all was said and done including couriers, VAT etc. the total cost was €500 or there abouts. good bit dearer than the US eh?
I guess one of the joys of the second hand market.
But i am happy to have it back!!!

    :)

Aww thank feck - i was wondering what happened with that. €500 isn't a huge amount, really though, considering sometimes the whole thing might be scuppered.

You won't be easily parted from it now I bet ;)
