This is only for interest I ask..no probs at home

have sky...with 1 cable feed down from the satellite....all grand
later on, Got Sky+ for another room ..had to add another 2 feeds from sat to the new room...so 3 feeds in total

question is why cant we just split a signal...from the dish..would make life a lot easier

it might be a stupid question:confused: ...but would love to know

    Thanks in advance...

If you only had one cable going in to sky+ box then you wouldnt able to watch one channel while you record another. So there must be 2 connections coming from the lnb for sky+ to work properly. If you split the cable then it would just be the same as havin one cable coming from the lnb.

Each receiver needs it's own feed to/from the LNB (receiver part on the dish) as it has to be able to switch the LNB between Horizontal (hi/low) and Vertical (hi/low) depending on the polarisation of the channel you want to watch.

In theory you could split the cable to each box, but the channel selection on each dish would be according to whatever the LNB is at - if one box changed the LNB, then the channel would change on all the other boxes as well.

Your LNB is probably a quad LNB, which is effectively 4 LNBs in one.

Sky+ is effectively 2 boxes in one. So it needs 2 feeds.

You can't split a satellite cable, as a Satellite tuner is partly in the LNB at the end of dish arm.

This is sort of like a Shortwave radio with 4 bands, but the band selector attached to the outdoor aerial. The Satellite Receiver switches a 22kHz tone on or off and voltage to 13V or 18V to remotely select the 4 possible groups of channels.

So each tuner or receiver needs a separate cable and LNB connection..

As always..I'm in awe of your knowledge

It is possible to use one cable coming into your house by use of A Stacker/Destacker Unit but they are quite expensive in my opinion. Basically two cables go into the Stacker unit from the dish and then one cable comes out to wherever you place the box.

Then u use a Destacker which separate's the 2 signals into individual feeds for Sky plus or Sky HD.

    They are also quite bad.
Also rubbish is "shotgun" figure of 8 coax.

You also still need Multiple LNB outputs.
There is an other incompatible system that put up to 16 "tuners" in the LNB and then a single cable can be split or daisy chained for up to 16 receivers, each of which gets one channel. It's not compatible with ordinary Satellite receivers or LNBs.
