    hi all

I am getting together my order to ishi,
(I have made contact, got quote, item is available, etc)

Will the item be hand delivered or will I get a
note through my door to pick it up at the local post sorting office?

Does a person come to the door to collect the custom duty
or do I have to go somewhere to sort it out?
    its 25%? right?

I am going on hols for a week and was thinking about
getting the guitar sent to my job, so its waiting for me
(a perfect remedy to post-hols blues)

Could I leave the customs cash with a colleague
or do I have to do the transaction in person?

Is it likely to sit in customs for ages?

    Any other things worth knowing?

    Thanks

The item should be delivered by an An Post van. Unless its of very high value, you can pay the customs straight to the delivery guy, they will have pre-paid it already to get it through customs, so you're rembursing them.

    25% is roughly right.

The fact that its a registered (signed) delivery, it should really be you signing for the parcel. There shouldnt be a problem with a mate signing for you, but it's slightly possible the delivery guy will be a bit iffy.

It won't sit in customs longer than a day or two. It's usually a week from when it leaves Japan to when it is delivered.

Yeah, id say it will be here by then alright, they ship on saturdays & sundays. It'll leave Japan almost instantly (those guys know how to do things properly), and will spend four or five days meandering slowly through the Irish system. Id expect it in the second half of next week.

Don't forget its tradition to post up pics of your new guitar when you get it, spread the GAS around a little:D

If it cost you more than 650 Euro there's a little more red tape involved

Im not sure if the figure is E650.

I dont know what the figure is, or if there are other circumstances, or if its just a random thing or what. Alls i know is ive brought in plenty of stuff from Japan costing more than E650 and only had to jump through those hoops you're talking about once.

mmmm my purchase is 632 (including shipping)

what sort of red tape is it?
    (just in case it happens!)

    thanks

I don't see it happen, i wouldnt worry about it.

Under certain circumstances, the customs dept will require clearance paperwork to bring the items into the country.

I havent researched it enough to know exactly the craic (you could find out with a phonecall), but as far as I know, its only for goods of high value (2k+?), OR, if they think you are a commercial importer.

Fingers seems to have been hit for something cheaper, so, like i said, im not sure exactly how they decide it.

Basically if the item is > 650 Euro they won't accept the excise duty payment. You have to get a customs clearance agent involved which is a little bit of hassle. It looks like your in the clear though because i'm sure they don't include the additional shipping price when totting up the total . Looks ike you'll just have to pay the postman the excise duty by cheque.

Like i said already, i disagree with that figure, ive brought in a lot of guitars and amps worth well over that figure without ever having to go down that avenue.

Only time it ever happened was with something over 2k. You could find out the craic by ringing the customs dept, but in this particular case, i think the chances of it happening are close to zero

Sure i only got hit with it a fortnight ago. They obviously have changed the legislation recently.
I like your new sig :) ..............Ibanez?

I can't argue with you 100% cos i never bothered finding out the exact regulations.

All i can go by is experience, and its only happened to me once out of 10+ times. Best i can figure is that its a human element - someone decides at the time whether to let it through. Maybe they keep a database of names/addresses, and if you're good for the money once, they dont bother you again.

Someone may be able to shed more light on it, it happens so rarely i never worry about it.

Guitar is an Ibanez J-Custom Rg-Art1. One of only 24 made as a showcase for the first year of J-Custom production.

    And its mine ;)

    hóla´from the canaries amigos

my jazzmaster arrived today, was charged the (expected amount)
    tax by the postie directly,

hats off to ishi, ordered last friday, arrived today (less than a week)

the only problem is.......I´m on bloody holiday,,,aaaaghhh
I am trying to think of an excuse to get home early...

Ah, well... I have wnated this guitar since I was 18, (15yrs ago)
so i suppose another two days wont kill me, its just killing me that its
    there and i´m not

I got it delivered to my workplace and arranged for someone
to pay the postie if it arrived before i got back

the postie rang me to say he was heading over and I would need the dosh
to recieve the item, he had no problem accepting a cheque that was not
signed by me or from my account and also had no problem with someone else signing for it.

the postage was not on the docket, so was not taxed on that

    FYI..
the guitar was 86,000yen, post was 16,000 (cant find the calc on this pc)
    charged 147.55 euro by postie

    expect piccies over the weekend,

    ciao

Congrats, but you were charged custom on the postage, by the sounds of it.
