Lens advice

I need a bit of advice on a lens choice for this coming season, I shoot a lot of Equestrian related events (Showjumping, Polo, Cross country, Hunting and such) I wanted to get another lens to get a bit more reach and improved IQ. The 2 lenses that I am wondering about are the 100-400L and the 300mm f4L IS. In your opinion what do you think will give the best IQ out of these two. I can put a 1.4x Teleconverter on the 300mm to give me 480mm @f5.6. I have tried the Sigma 1.4x TC on my 70-200 and it slows the AF too much. They will be used on mostly bright days maybe a bit overcast but not indoors. Any help greatly appreciated :)

    My other equipment is
    Sigma 70-200 f2.8
    Sigma 18-50 f2.8
    Canon 85mm f1.8
    Canon 50mm f1.8
    Sigma 1.4x TC
    Canon 350D
    Canon 20D

Would the 135 f/2 L be any use to you?

AF is really fast. It's probably my favourite lens apart from the 70-200 2.8 IS...

I had a look at one of those for indoors and it is really nice and the price was good too, but just isnt long enough. I have it covered with the 70-200.

    Thanks

I have the 100-400 and quality wise it's excellent. It is heavy (very heavy) and the widest apperture is 5.6. I haven't used it enough yet to give any kind of wirthwhile advice on using it for following action, that wont happen until the holidays. If you want to borrow it for a weekend just ask.

Borderfox, the 300mm f4 will have better image quality and faster AF, but thats not saying the 100-400mm is bad as its an excellent lens and IMO it would suit you better for the type of photography you want to use it for. I would'nt class the 100-400mm heavy at all, actually the canon 70-200m f2.8 IS is heavier.

Hmmm, I've used the 300 f/4 IS too, it's another great lens, good AF, and the IS works pretty well.
