Outlook 2003 won't "remember" Contacts

when i use outlook 2003, and exit the application, outlook forgets all the contacts that it auto suggested. It is like it clears the cache when the application is closed. I can't find any *.n2k file in the outlook folder and there does not seem to be any way to get outlook to create one. Can anyone advise?
