Im from ireland and thinking of traveling, I would be going on my own and for this reason I was advised to think twice about america as it wouldnt be safe on my own, say the wrong thing to the wrong person and you would be found dead in some steet alley or found shot in the toliet of some bar -he advised me to go to australia instead it would be much safer on my own-he said if you have a gropu to go with usa would be better though, is he overreacting?

I was wondering if its too late for me to go traveling-the reason I think this is because im 28(29 in may) and I havent really sorted out my professional life out yet.

Most people either start traveling straight after college and worry about getting work experience when they come back or some get a few years experience in their chosen field in full knowledge they will walk into a job when they come back.

But me I spent 4 years in college to get a pass diploma in chemistry and my experience to date is not great 3 years in 3 different jobs, although similar jobs as there in the pharma industry, but if I went away i would still only be going back to an entry level job.

Also im not sure pharmaceutical/chemistry field is for me

Whoever told you that needs a whack over the back of the head. Of course there are dangerous areas but that could be any country in the world. What part are you thinking of going to? Sure if you haven't been there before maybe bring someone along with you, always good to travel in a group sometimes.

America is like most other countries. There are some places you don't go, and some amazing places that have to be seen.

What a ridiculous thing to say.
I think your friend has been watching too much bad TV and let their imagination run wild.

There are plenty of places in Ireland that you would know to avoid, right?
The same thing goes for every other country.

Get yourself a Lonely Planet guidebook and do a bit of research on the places you'd like to visit.
Some prior knowledge of the places you intend to visit and a bit of common sense and you'll be fine.

OP, you don't need to start a multitude of threads. Try keep it all in one place.

    Merged.

Never too late to travel, I took a years leave of apsence from a semi state job, back in 1989, I was 28yo. It was a job for life with pension but I needed a break and wanted experience abroad.

Went to the States and then Australia I was in the metal work trade and had no trouble getting casual work, phoned in a year later with my resignation. I had working visas for both countries and didnt settle back in Ireland again until 1994. I know now that if i didnt do it at the time I would have never done it after that. Im paying for it now having being on the dole between several jobs since.

I only had hassle twice in my travells and I blame myself for being in the wrong area at the wrong time. Every country in this planet has its no go areas. There is areas of this country that I would consider worse than the Watts district of LA, It dosent take much to find out on line about tips on going out and what areas and times to avoid these areas, there is also common sense such not flashing your wallet in public etc.

Ah come on. Are you 29 or just 9? I thing your friend is watching too much CSI or Law and Order.

Name me one country in the world that doesn't have it's problem areas in big cities. To say that your friend is over-reacting is a gross understatement - he's delusional. I have been all over the US and have never, ever once seen trouble, or a gun, or any kind of the silliness your friend is talking about.

As for traveling, without hesitation, go for it. It's never too late. If you are unhappy, afraid, unsure, delusional, whatever, living and working in a new culture is a valuable life-lesson. You will never regret it.

just get up and go,...if you think about it much longer you'll be a year older....anyway people change careers all the time nowadays. your still young and you've plenty of time....put your time to use and try and learn a language or something when your away,...that'll make you even more employable when you get home. I got a cert in thai massage from a really experienced master teacher when i was in thailand,....really enjoyed it and came home with a qualification!

    I totally second that!
Its never too late to travel!
I'm two years out of college - most of my friends, after the obligatory year out to find themselves (its astonishing how many of 'ourselves' seem to be hanging about in Irish bars down under! ;) have returned to jobs they don't really like here, and are plodding along scared to leave, because of the same reasons you outlined above.
-At 28 you are still young!
-It is a purely Irish phenomenon that once you hit your mid twenties you are supposed to have your life and career all planned out!
On the continent, most people don't even leave college until they are 26/27/28!
You will meet LOTS of fellow travelers on the road your age and older don't worry!
My guess is that if you don't go you will always regret it, whereas if you do, you wont regret a minute of it!
